Gutters ยท Sumter County
Gutters in Sumter County, FL
Hurricane Irma dropped 9.18 inches on a gauge north-northwest of The Villages in 2017, but gutters are sized for the burst, not the storm total. At The Villages, the nearest point in our NOAA Atlas 14 data, a 10-year storm rains 9.55 inches an hour for five minutes, and gutters in Sumter County have to carry that.

Gutters in Sumter County, in short
If your eaves stick out less than 6 inches, Florida's residential code calls for gutters and downspouts, and each downspout has to let the water out at least 1 foot from the wall. Size matters most, and the jump is big: a 6-inch half-round moves about 49% more water than a 5-inch at the same slope. At The Villages' rain rates, a 6-inch half-round serves about 2,671 square feet of roof on the plumbing code's hourly basis but about 1,107 on the 5-minute burst.
Sizing
Five minutes of hard rain sets the gutter size
Florida's 5-minute rain bursts vary less than you might think: in our ten NOAA Atlas 14 points, the 10-year rate spans 8.71 inches an hour at Orlando to 11.3 at West Palm Beach. Sumter's figure, taken at The Villages, is 9.55, and a 100-year burst there reaches 13.4.
The plumbing code sizes gutters by the flow coming off the roof (FBC-P 1106.6). At a slope of 1/8 inch per foot, its table rates semicircular gutters like this:
- 4-inch: 39 gallons a minute
- 5-inch: 74 gallons a minute
- 6-inch: 110 gallons a minute
- 8-inch: 247 gallons a minute
The conversion is simple: under 1 inch an hour of rain, every 96.15 square feet of roof sends off 1 gallon a minute. Run it at the Villages point and the design basis changes everything: one 6-inch half-round at 1/8 inch per foot serves about 2,671 square feet of plan area at the code's 100-year hourly rate of 3.96 inches, and only about 1,107 at the 9.55-inch burst. Those figures fit a roof rising 3 inches per foot or less; at 6 to 8 inches, count 1.10 times the plan area, so each run covers less.
With a gap of more than double, gutter size here is a design choice: give us your roof's size and pitch, and we will size the runs and downspouts to match.
Downspouts
Downspouts and the 1-foot discharge rule
The plumbing code rates leaders too (FBC-P Table 1106.3), at 92 gallons a minute for a 3-inch round and 192 for a 4-inch round. A 6-inch half-round gutter at 110 gallons a minute outruns a single 3-inch leader, so count downspouts as carefully as you choose gutter size.
Where the water lands is code too, and the rule lives in a termite-protection section, FBCR R318.5. Downspouts discharge at least 1 foot from the wall, by underground pipe, extensions or splash blocks, and eaves under 6 inches need gutters with downspouts, except at gable rakes or on a roof above another roof.

For the gutters themselves, FBCR R903.4.2 asks for metal or outdoor-rated plastic, joints that are lapped, soldered or caulked, and corrosion-resistant fasteners that match the gutter material.
Trees
Oak litter, pine straw and when to clean
If your lot has live oaks, UF/IFAS lists their leaf and fruit litter as a known problem, from trees that reach 60 to 80 feet tall with a spread up to 120. Florida's pollen season runs January to June and peaks in March and April, with oaks and pines among the heavy producers, and pines drop the most needles from September through November.
In Sumter County, finish the spring cleaning before June 1: Debby, Helene and Milton all brought FEMA declarations to the county in 2024, between August and October.
Storm season
Hangers and fascia when storms hit
Hanger spacing is a storm detail: one hidden-hanger maker treats 24 inches on center as standard but recommends clips at 16 inches for more uplift resistance where storms are common.
Rotten fascia undoes good hangers, and Florida puts fascia replacement during roof repair or replacement inside the roofing contractor's scope. Milton's 11.71 inches at one Sumter County gauge is the kind of storm that finds a soft board.

Questions
Gutters in Sumter County: questions
What size gutters does a Sumter County home need?
Three numbers decide it: your roof's plan area, its pitch and the rain rate the design uses. Using the 9.55-inch-an-hour burst at The Villages, the Atlas 14 point for this county, one 6-inch half-round at 1/8 inch per foot covers roughly 1,107 square feet of roof. A 5-inch gutter carries about a third less water at the same slope, so a larger roof calls for 6-inch runs, more downspouts, or both.
Are gutters required by code in Sumter County?
Only on some houses. Under FBCR R318.5, part of the 2023 code Sumter County Building Services enforces, a house needs gutters with downspouts only when its eaves project less than 6 inches, and not at gable end rakes or where one roof drains onto another. Any downspout you add has to empty at least 1 foot out from the wall. In The Villages, new gutters change the exterior, so the Architectural Review Application applies to them as well.
How often should gutters be cleaned under oaks and pines?
Tower Hill Insurance, a Florida home insurer, says twice a year at minimum, spring and fall, and more often where trees hang over the roof. Under oaks and pines that means after the spring pollen and leaf drop, which peaks in March and April, and again after the pine-needle fall of September through November. In Sumter County, clear them before June 1 too: Irma's 9.18 inches near The Villages came in September 2017.
Should downspouts tie into underground drains?
They can. FBCR R318.5 accepts underground piping as one way to carry downspout water at least 1 foot from the wall, along with tail extensions and splash blocks. An underground line has to carry the downspout's full flow in a heavy hour, which at The Villages, our Atlas 14 point for Sumter County, reaches 2.83 inches in a 10-year storm and 3.96 inches in a 100-year storm. Size the pipe to the downspout and give it a clear outlet away from the house.
