Gutters in Coleman, FL

Coleman's 1.5 square miles are all land, so the 9.49 inches an hour that NOAA's Atlas 14 gives for a 10-year, five-minute burst here has no lake inside town to run to. Every gallon leaves a roof through a gutter or off an eave and soaks in near a foundation, which is why the code cares where downspouts point.

Local know-how

Where Coleman roof water goes

Florida's residential code requires gutters and downspouts where eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable rakes or a roof above another roof, and every downspout must discharge at least 1 foot from the wall, by underground pipe, extension or splash block (R318.5).

The 100-year version of the same five-minute burst at Coleman is 13.2 inches an hour. For a day's total, the nearest Atlas 14 point in our data with a 24-hour figure is The Villages, where a 10-year storm drops 6.13 inches in 24 hours; the calculator below turns that into gallons for your roof.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 6.13 inches (see the sources below).

7,638 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.

Fascia, fasteners and storms in Coleman

A gutter is only as strong as the board it hangs on, and on a house near Coleman's 1974 median build year the fascia deserves a look first. Florida rules put fascia, soffit and gutters inside the specialty structure contractor's scope, and a roofing contractor may replace fascia during roof repair or replacement.

The code wants gutters and leaders of metal or outdoor-rated plastic, with lapped, soldered or caulked joints and corrosion-resistant fasteners compatible with the gutter (R903.4.2). One hanger maker lists 24 inches on center as standard and 16 inches for added uplift resistance in storm-prone areas, and Sumter County's record backs that up: Irma left 8.57 inches on a Wildwood gauge in 2017 and Milton up to 11.71 inches on county gauges in 2024.

Questions

Gutters in Coleman: questions

Where should downspouts drain on a Coleman house?

At least 1 foot from the wall, by underground pipe, a tail extension or a splash block, under section R318.5 of the Florida Residential Code. In a town whose 1.5 square miles are all land, that water has to soak in somewhere, so aim it at ground that slopes away from the slab. A 10-year, five-minute burst at Coleman runs 9.49 inches an hour by NOAA Atlas 14.

How much roof can one gutter drain in Coleman?

Less than most people expect in a cloudburst. By our arithmetic on the plumbing code's gutter table and NOAA Atlas 14, a 5-inch half-round gutter at 1/8-inch slope drains about 750 square feet of roof plan area during Coleman's 10-year, five-minute burst of 9.49 inches an hour, and a 6-inch about 1,114. A steep roof needs more: multiply its plan area by 1.05 to 1.30 depending on pitch before comparing.

Do Coleman gutters need special fasteners?

They need corrosion-resistant ones that match the gutter material. The Florida Residential Code requires gutters and leaders to be securely fastened with a corrosion-resistant device of similar or compatible material, with lapped, soldered or caulked joints. One hidden-hanger maker recommends tightening spacing from 24 to 16 inches for uplift resistance in storm-prone areas. Sumter County storms such as Irma and Milton are the reason to spend on hangers, and on a 1974-era house the fascia behind them matters as much.
