Gutters in Wildwood, FL
NOAA Atlas 14 puts Wildwood's 10-year storm at 9.43 inches an hour for five minutes and 2.83 inches over a full hour. Gutters in Wildwood have to handle that short burst, about three and a third times the hourly rate. On the city's newer homes, eave depth decides whether code requires them at all.

Local know-how
Wildwood rain by the minute and by the year
Annual totals tell a quieter story. The county's NOAA normals station east of Bushnell publishes no rainfall normal, so the nearest published one in our data is Leesburg's municipal airport at 43.78 inches a year, below Ocala's 51.64. Gutters are not sized on yearly totals, though; they are sized on flow.
The plumbing code's gutter table gives a 5-inch half-round 74 gallons a minute at a 1/8-inch-per-foot slope, and a 6-inch one 110. One inch of rain an hour on 96.15 square feet of roof makes one gallon a minute, so 2,000 square feet of roof plan area in a 9.43-inch burst sends roughly 196 gallons a minute toward its gutters.
That flow is split among downspouts. The code rates a 3-inch round leader at 92 gallons a minute and a 4-inch round at 192, and each one must discharge at least 1 foot from the wall.
Code and trees
Short eaves, live oaks and Wildwood's newer houses
On a newer Wildwood house, check the eaves. FBC-Residential R318.5 requires gutters with downspouts where eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable-end rakes or a roof above another roof. With 74.8% of homes built since 2010 and a median build year of 2017, the builder may already have made that call for you.
Trees set the cleaning calendar: oak pollen peaks in March and April, UF/IFAS lists live oak fruit and leaves as a litter problem, and pine needles drop hardest from September through November. A Florida insurer advises cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall, and more often under heavy canopy.
For storm-prone areas, one hidden-hanger maker recommends 16-inch hanger spacing rather than its standard 24, a detail worth asking about when gutters go up.

Rain on your roof
Preset: 6.08 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Wildwood).
7,576 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.
Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.
Questions
Gutters in Wildwood: questions
Is it bad for a Wildwood house to not have gutters?
Not always, but the water has to go somewhere. Florida code requires gutters only on eaves under 6 inches, and where they exist, downspouts must discharge at least 1 foot from the sidewall, a rule that sits in the code's termite-protection section. A Florida insurer lists water damage, mold, roof damage, pests and foundation issues as results of clogged gutters. On the 74.8% of Wildwood homes built since 2010, check the eave depth first; in a 9.43-inch-an-hour burst, roof water with no gutter lands right at the foundation line.

Should I replace 20-year-old gutters on a Wildwood house?
Replace them for their condition, not their birthday. Leaking seams, runs that hold water, hangers backing out and soft fascia behind the trough are the reasons to act. In Wildwood, 19.5% of homes were built before 2000, so any original gutters on those houses are past 25 years. A new run has to meet Florida's residential code: metal or approved plastic made for outdoor exposure, joints that are lapped, soldered or caulked, and corrosion-resistant fasteners of a material compatible with the gutter (R903.4.2). Florida's contractor law lets a roofing contractor replace fascia as needed during roof work, and the specialty-structure scope lists soffit, fascia and gutters together, so have rotted fascia fixed before a new gutter is hung on it.

Do gutter guards work in Wildwood's storms?
They help with leaves but have limits in a downpour. In Consumer Reports' 2010 tests, fine-mesh screens beat screens with larger holes, yet even the top-scoring screen was only middling at containing a severe downpour, and guards still needed brushing in high-pollen areas. Wildwood's 10-year, five-minute burst of 9.43 inches an hour is the kind of rain that tests them. Plan on fewer cleanings, not none.
