Gutters in Bushnell, FL
Sumter County's NOAA weather station carries the town's name, BUSHNELL 1 E, and logs a mean daily high of 81.8°F, yet it publishes no yearly rainfall normal. Gutter sizing in Bushnell runs on NOAA's Atlas 14 instead: 9.44 inches an hour in a 10-year, five-minute burst at the city's center. Gutters in Bushnell have to carry that.

Local know-how
Sizing Bushnell gutters to a 9.44-inch burst
Atlas 14's figures for Bushnell climb with rarity: 10.9 inches an hour for the 25-year five-minute burst and 13.1 for the 100-year, and 3.91 inches over a full 100-year hour. Those short bursts, not the storm totals, are what a gutter has to pass.
Steeper roofs collect more rain than their footprint suggests. The sizing tables multiply plan area by a pitch factor: 1.05 for a 4- or 5-inch rise per foot, 1.10 for 6 to 8, 1.20 for 9 to 11 and 1.30 for a 12-inch rise.
Code and upkeep
Florida's gutter rule, oak litter and older Bushnell eaves
Florida code does not put gutters on every house. The residential code requires gutters with downspouts only where eaves project less than 6 inches, with gable-end rakes and a roof above another roof excepted, and wherever downspouts run, they must empty at least 1 foot from the wall by splash block, extension or underground pipe (R318.5).
Most of Bushnell's homes, 79.6 percent, predate 2000, and a replacement gutter on one of them still has to meet the code's material rule: metal or approved plastic made for outdoor exposure, with lapped, soldered or caulked joints and corrosion-resistant fasteners compatible with the gutter (R903.4.2). Soft fascia behind an old gutter should be replaced before the new run is hung, and Florida's contractor rules allow fascia replacement as part of roof repair or replacement.
Central Florida's oaks and pines decide how often. UF/IFAS puts the oak pollen peak in March and April and the heaviest pine-needle fall in September through November, and it rates southern live oak leaves and fruit a litter problem. Tower Hill Insurance, writing for Florida homeowners, puts the floor at two cleanings a year, spring and fall, with more under overhanging trees.

Rain on your roof
How much water a Bushnell roof sheds
Rain on your roof
Preset: 6.01 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Bushnell).
7,488 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.
Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.
Questions
Gutters in Bushnell: questions
Why don't more Bushnell homes have gutters?
Because Florida code requires them only on short eaves. Under R318.5 of the residential code, gutters with downspouts are mandatory where eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable-end rakes or a roof above another roof; on deeper overhangs they are the owner's choice. Bushnell mixes older site-built homes, median build year 1983, with mobile homes, 50.4 percent of the stock, so measure the overhang on yours before assuming either way.

How much rain can one storm drop on Bushnell?
NOAA's Atlas 14 gives 6.01 inches in 24 hours as the 10-year rain at Bushnell's center, and 10.7 inches as the 100-year. Real storms have reached that range: Hurricane Hermine left 6.54 inches at a gauge 1.0 mile north-northwest of town in 2016, and Milton's 2024 totals at Sumter County gauges topped out at 11.71 inches. A gutter is sized for the five-minute peak; the daily total is what the ground at the foot of each downspout has to absorb.

Do gutters in Bushnell need closer hangers for storms?
It is worth asking for. One hidden-hanger maker's guidance makes a useful benchmark: 24 inches on center as standard, and 16-inch spacing with its clip option for coastal and storm-prone areas, for added uplift resistance. Sumter County's 135 mph design wind criterion and a storm record that runs from Hermine in 2016 to Milton in 2024 make the closer spacing worth asking about here. Whatever the spacing, Florida's residential code wants corrosion-resistant fasteners compatible with the gutter metal.
