Gutters in Center Hill, FL

NOAA's Atlas 14 puts a 10-year, five-minute downpour at Center Hill at 9.31 inches an hour, falling across a town of just 1.8 square miles. A gutter has to carry that burst, not the average shower, and the code wants every downspout to drop its water at least a foot from the wall.

Local know-how

How hard it rains on Center Hill

Those Atlas 14 figures are for the Census point at the center of town. The 100-year version of the same five-minute burst is 12.8 inches an hour, and the 100-year, one-hour rate is 3.89. Yearly totals are a different measure: Bushnell's NOAA station has no published precipitation normal, and the nearest one in our data, Leesburg's municipal airport, averages 43.78 inches a year (1991-2020).

Storms run past the averages. Hurricane Hermine left 6.54 inches on a gauge just north of Bushnell in 2016, and Milton's Sumter County totals reached 11.71 inches in 2024.

Code and upkeep

Gutter code and upkeep in Center Hill

Florida's residential code requires gutters and downspouts on buildings whose eaves stick out less than 6 inches, except at gable rakes or a roof above another roof (R318.5). Wherever downspouts run, they must discharge at least 1 foot from the wall, by splash block, extension or underground pipe; the rule sits in a termite-protection section of the code.

Gutters and leaders must be metal or plastic made for outdoor exposure, with lapped, soldered or caulked joints and corrosion-resistant fasteners of a compatible material (R903.4.2).

Trees set the cleaning calendar. UF/IFAS lists oaks among Florida's big pollen producers in a season that peaks in March and April, a southern live oak's leaves and fruit are a known litter problem, and pine needles fall heaviest from September through November. Tower Hill, a Florida insurer, recommends cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall, and more often under overhanging trees.

Preset: 6 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Center Hill).

7,476 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Questions

Gutters in Center Hill: questions

Does my Center Hill house need gutters by code?

Only if its eaves project less than 6 inches, under section R318.5 of the Florida Residential Code, which Sumter County Building Services enforces in Center Hill as part of the 2023 code. Gable-end rakes and a roof above another roof are excepted. Where gutters and downspouts are installed, the discharge has to land at least 1 foot from the wall. Houses with deeper overhangs are not required to have gutters; adding them is your call.

Should a Center Hill house get 5-inch or 6-inch gutters?

Run the numbers for your roof. A 6-inch half-round gutter carries about 49 percent more than a 5-inch one at the same slope, 110 against 74 gallons a minute in the plumbing code's table. At Center Hill's 10-year, five-minute rate of 9.31 inches an hour, the 5-inch gutter handles roughly 764 square feet of roof plan area and the 6-inch about 1,136, by our arithmetic, before any pitch factor. A long, steep roof face draining into one run is where the larger size earns its keep.

When should Center Hill gutters be cleaned?

At least twice a year, in spring and fall, is Tower Hill's guidance, with extra cleanings under overhanging trees. In Central Florida that lines up with the oak pollen peak in March and April and the pine needle fall from September through November, per UF/IFAS. A clean gutter before hurricane season matters here: Milton dropped up to 11.71 inches on Sumter County gauges, the largest storm total in our Sumter County record.
