Gutters in Ocala, FL
The Ocala weather station averages 51.64 inches of rain a year, and NOAA Atlas 14 puts the city's 10-year, 5-minute burst at 9.72 inches an hour. Gutters in Ocala have to be sized for that burst, not the yearly total, and their downspouts must drop the water at least a foot from the wall.

Local know-how
Sizing Ocala gutters for the 5-minute burst
At the city's center point, Atlas 14 gives a 5-minute rate of 9.72 inches an hour for a 10-year storm, 11.3 for a 25-year storm and 13.8 for a 100-year storm. Spread over a full hour, the 10-year rate drops to 2.83 inches. That gap is the whole sizing problem: a gutter that copes with an hour of steady rain can still overflow in the first few minutes of an afternoon downpour.
The plumbing code sizes gutters by flow. Its table rates a 6-inch half-round gutter at 1/8-inch-per-foot slope at 110 gallons a minute and a 5-inch at 74. Using the trade's conversion of 96.15 square feet of roof per gallon a minute at 1 inch an hour, a 6-inch half-round handles about 1,088 square feet of roof plan at Ocala's 9.72-inch rate, and a 5-inch about 732. On the code's 100-year, 1-hour rate for Ocala, 4.04 inches, the 6-inch figure rises to about 2,618. Those areas are worked arithmetic on the table, not code minimums, but they show why the design basis matters.
Older houses need a second look before new gutters go up. With 72.2% of Ocala homes built before 2000 and a median of 1984, check the fascia before hanging anything new; a gutter is only as secure as the board behind it. The code wants gutters of metal or approved plastic, fastened with corrosion-resistant hardware that matches the gutter material.
Trees and storms
Leaves, needles and wind on Ocala gutters
If live oaks or pines overhang your Ocala roof, plan on more cleaning than the twice-a-year spring and fall rhythm a Florida insurer recommends. UF/IFAS lists southern live oaks as a litter problem, Florida pollen runs from January to June with a March and April peak, and pine needles fall heaviest from September through November. A sensible pass comes after the spring leaf drop and again after the autumn needle fall.
Storm gusts pull on gutter hangers. Nicole's 36-knot gust and Milton's 35-knot gust at the Ocala station are the kind of wind that works every fastener along an eave. One hidden-hanger maker spaces hangers 24 inches apart as standard and recommends 16 inches with clips in storm-prone areas. And wherever eaves stick out less than 6 inches, the code requires gutters and downspouts, with the downspouts discharging at least 1 foot from the wall; the rule sits in the code's termite-protection section.

Rain on your roof
Preset: 6.28 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Ocala).
7,825 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Questions
Gutters in Ocala: questions
Does an Ocala house have to have gutters?
Only some do, under Florida's code. Gutters with downspouts are required where the eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable-end rakes or over a lower roof, so a house with deeper overhangs can legally go without. That does not make them pointless here. Ocala averages 51.64 inches of rain a year, and the code's own 1-foot discharge rule sits in its termite-protection section, a hint at what water at the foundation invites.

Do I want 5-inch or 6-inch gutters in Ocala?
For a large or steep Ocala roof, the 6-inch usually earns its place. In the plumbing code's table, a 6-inch half-round carries about 49% more than a 5-inch at the same slope, 110 gallons a minute against 74. At Ocala's 25-year, 5-minute rate of 11.3 inches an hour, that works out to roughly 936 square feet of roof plan for the 6-inch and 630 for the 5-inch, before any pitch factor. Steeper roofs shed more water into the same gutter, so the trade multiplies plan area by a pitch factor of up to 1.30.

Does Ocala's summer rain change where downspouts should go?
It should change how far you carry the water. The code sets a minimum: downspouts discharge at least 1 foot from the wall, by underground pipe, extension or splash block. Ocala's summers test that minimum, with 21.42 inches of rain on average from June through August and storm totals like Irma's 8.63 inches at a gauge 1.1 miles southeast of the city. Aim downspouts toward ground that slopes away from the house, and keep them clear of walkways and the neighbor's lot.
