Gutters in On Top of the World, FL
NOAA Atlas 14 gives On Top of the World a 100-year, five-minute rain rate of 13.7 inches an hour and a 10-year rate of 9.74. A gutter system here has to clear those bursts, and the downspouts are where that math gets tight.

Downspout math for On Top of the World roofs
Florida's plumbing code rates a 3-inch round downspout at 92 gallons a minute and a 4-inch round at 192. One gallon a minute drains 96.15 square feet of roof at 1 inch an hour of rain. At the 9.74-inch, 10-year burst, a 3-inch downspout keeps up with about 910 square feet of roof plan area and a 4-inch with about 1,900.
At the 100-year rate of 13.7 inches, the same downspouts cover about 650 and 1,350 square feet. This is arithmetic on NOAA and code numbers, not a code requirement, and it shows why a long roof edge usually needs more than one downspout.
Every downspout must discharge at least 1 foot from the wall, by pipe, extension or splash block, under FBC-R R318.5, a termite-protection section.
Upkeep
Keeping gutters clear with less time on a ladder
At a median age of 71.4, ladder work is a real cost of gutter upkeep here. Consumer Reports' tests found fine-mesh guards beat screens with larger holes, yet even the top-scoring screen was only middling in a severe downpour, and guards may still need brushing where pollen is heavy.
Timing cuts trips. UF/IFAS puts Florida's pollen season from January to June, peaking in March and April, with laurel oaks first and then live oaks; pine needles fall hardest from September through November. Tower Hill, a Florida insurer, recommends at least two cleanings a year, spring and fall. With 92.6% of occupied homes owner-occupied, that schedule is usually the owner's to keep.
On the 36.9% of homes built before 2000, check the fascia whenever a gutter comes down. Florida's contractor law lets a roofing contractor repair fascia as needed during a roof job.
Rain on your roof
How much water an On Top of the World roof sheds
Rain on your roof
Preset: 6.56 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at On Top of the World).
8,174 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.
Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.
Questions
Gutters in On Top of the World: questions
How many downspouts does an On Top of the World roof need?
Divide the roof's plan area by what each downspout can clear. At the 10-year, five-minute Atlas 14 rate here, 9.74 inches an hour, a 3-inch round downspout handles about 910 square feet and a 4-inch about 1,900. A 2,000-square-foot roof drained by 3-inch downspouts needs at least three by that math, and the 100-year burst of 13.7 inches would call for four. Gutter size and slope also limit each run.
Do gutters help keep termites away from On Top of the World homes?
The code treats them that way. FBC-R R318.5, which requires gutters where eaves project less than 6 inches and sends downspout water at least 1 foot from the wall, sits in the code's termite-protection section, and FBC-B 1503.7 repeats it. Keeping roof water away from the slab and sidewall is the goal. In a place that sees 21.42 inches of rain from June through August at the Ocala station, splash blocks and extensions earn their keep.
Which gutter materials does Florida's code allow?
FBC-R R903.4.2 allows metal or approved plastic rated for outdoor exposure, with lapped, soldered or caulked joints, fastened to the house with corrosion-resistant hardware compatible with the gutter. The code does not rank one metal over another, so the choice comes down to the roof, the trim color and the budget. For hangers, one hidden-hanger maker recommends 16-inch spacing instead of 24 in storm-prone areas, and the Ocala airport saw a 36-knot gust in Nicole.
