Gutters in Marion Oaks, FL
Marion Oaks gets bursts of 9.74 inches an hour in a 10-year, five-minute storm by NOAA Atlas 14, and the Ocala station's 1991-2020 normal is 51.64 inches of rain a year. Gutters here are sized for the burst, not the yearly total, and 5-inch and 6-inch gutters handle it very differently.

Local know-how
Sizing gutters for a Marion Oaks downpour
Florida's plumbing code rates a 5-inch half-round gutter at 1/8 inch per foot for 74 gallons a minute. A gallon a minute matches 96.15 square feet of roof under an inch an hour of rain, so at the 9.74-inch burst that gutter drains about 730 square feet of plan area. On the code's 100-year, one-hour basis of 4.02 inches, the same gutter covers about 1,770.
A 6-inch half-round carries about 49% more, 110 gallons a minute against 74, which is why big roofs and long runs go up a size. Pitch counts as well: a roof sloped 6 to 8 inches per foot multiplies its plan area by 1.10 in the sizing tables.
June through August brings 21.42 of the station's 51.64 inches. One storm can top a summer month's average: Milton put 9.68 inches into the gauge south of Ocala. Hermine left 6.18.
Downspouts and fascia
Downspouts, fascia and new-home rules in Marion Oaks
Downspouts set the pace as much as gutters. The plumbing code rates a 3-inch round leader at 92 gallons a minute and a 4-inch round at 192, and under R318.5 every downspout must discharge at least 1 foot from the wall. On a new home, R318.5 also requires gutters wherever eaves project less than 6 inches, and 27.8% of Marion Oaks homes were built in 2010 or later.
Hangers and fascia take the storm load. Florida's contractor law lets a roofing contractor repair or replace fascia as needed during a roof repair or replacement, and one hidden-hanger maker recommends 16-inch spacing instead of 24 for storm-prone areas.
Owners and tenants should settle who cleans them: 75.7% of occupied Marion Oaks homes are owner-occupied, so about one in four is a rental. Tower Hill, a Florida insurer, suggests at least twice a year, in spring and fall.
Rain on your roof
How much water a Marion Oaks roof sheds
Rain on your roof
Preset: 6.34 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Marion Oaks).
7,900 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.
Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.
Questions
Gutters in Marion Oaks: questions
Why do some Marion Oaks homes have no gutters?
Florida's code only requires them on houses whose eaves project less than 6 inches. FBC-R R318.5 sets that rule, with exceptions for gable-end rakes and a roof above another roof, and it sits in a termite-protection section: the point is keeping water off the foundation. A home with wider eaves can legally go without. With 51.64 inches of rain a year at the Ocala station, the real choice is where that water lands, since downspouts must discharge at least 1 foot from the wall.
Do gutter guards work in Marion Oaks?
They reduce cleaning but do not end it. Consumer Reports' 2010 tests found fine-mesh screens outperformed screens with larger holes, but even the top-scoring screen was only middling at containing a severe downpour, and screens may need brushing in high-pollen areas. That matters in Marion Oaks, where a 25-year Atlas 14 burst reaches 11.3 inches an hour and UF/IFAS puts pollen season from January to June. Check guarded gutters after big storms anyway.
Who repairs rotted fascia behind a Marion Oaks gutter?
Florida splits it by job. A roofing contractor may repair or replace fascia as needed during a roof repair or replacement, under Fla. Stat. 489.105(3)(e). The state's specialty structure contractor scope lists siding, soffit, fascia and gutters together, and local practice on gutter-only work varies, so ask Marion County Building Safety what it requires. On the 42.7% of Marion Oaks homes built before 2000, check the fascia whenever gutters come down.
