Gutters in Umatilla, FL
Umatilla's 1,921 homes sit under a 10-year, 5-minute rain rate of 9.28 inches an hour, NOAA Atlas 14's figure for the city's point. Gutters in Umatilla have to carry that burst, and under oaks and pines they also have to carry leaves and needles.

Local know-how
How hard it rains at Umatilla's point
Atlas 14's table for Umatilla reads 9.28 inches an hour for a 10-year, 5-minute burst, 10.7 for a 25-year and 12.8 for a 100-year. Stretch the storm to an hour and the 10-year rate is 2.85 inches, the 100-year 3.97. The short bursts are what spill over a gutter's front lip.
NOAA's normals for Leesburg, the county's main station, show 43.78 inches a year with 19.49 falling June through August, and the Lisbon station records 50.03 a year. Storms add more on top: Irma put 11.03 inches on a Lady Lake gauge in 2017.
At the Gateway to the Ocala National Forest, the trees set the cleaning calendar. UF/IFAS lists oaks and pines as major pollen producers from January through June, live oak litter as a nuisance, and September through November as peak pine-needle fall. A Florida home insurer advises cleaning at least twice a year, more under overhanging trees.
Sizing
What size gutter handles 9.28 inches an hour
Start from the plumbing code's capacity table. At 1/8-inch slope it rates a 5-inch half-round at 74 gallons a minute, a 6-inch at 110 and an 8-inch at 247. Each gallon a minute drains 96.15 square feet of roof at 1 inch an hour of rain, per the SMACNA-based tables.
Divide by Umatilla's 9.28 and a 6-inch half-round covers about 1,140 square feet of roof plan area, an 8-inch about 2,560, before a steeper roof's factor of 1.05 to 1.30 trims those numbers. That is our arithmetic on the cited inputs.
Where eaves overhang less than 6 inches, the residential code makes gutters and downspouts mandatory, and every downspout has to discharge at least a foot from the wall by pipe, extension or splash block.

Rain on your roof
Preset: 6.1 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Umatilla).
7,601 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.
Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.
Questions
Gutters in Umatilla: questions
Do gutter guards work under Umatilla's oaks and pines?
They help but don't end the chore. Consumer Reports' 2010 tests found fine-mesh screens beat screens with larger holes, yet even the top-scoring screen was only middling in a severe downpour, and guards still needed brushing in high-pollen areas. Under live oaks and pines, which UF/IFAS ties to heavy litter and pollen from January through June, check guarded gutters each spring and fall. NOAA's Leesburg normals of 43.78 inches a year keep them busy.

Should I replace 20-year-old gutters on a house in Umatilla?
Replace them when they fail the job, not on a birthday. Three checks: whether the size fits a 9.28-inch-an-hour burst at Umatilla's point, where a 5-inch half-round carries 74 gallons a minute against 110 for a 6-inch; whether the joints are still lapped, soldered or caulked tight as the code requires; and whether the hangers and corrosion-resistant fasteners still hold. Umatilla's median house was built in 1986, so plenty of systems here are past that 20-year mark.

How do gutters in Umatilla hold up in hurricanes?
Hangers and fasteners do most of the work. One hidden-hanger maker uses 24-inch spacing as standard and recommends 16 inches in storm-prone areas for more uplift resistance, and Florida's code wants corrosion-resistant fasteners compatible with the gutter metal. Leesburg's airport logged a 72-knot gust in Milton in 2024 and 60 knots in Irma in 2017. Walk the eaves once the wind drops and note any run that sags, any hanger that has let go and any joint that drips.
