Roof replacement in Reddick, FL
Reddick's median home was built in 1983, the Census Bureau estimates, with an 11-year margin either way in a town this small. Both ends of that range fall before Florida's statewide building code of 2002, so a roof replacement here meets a deck nailed under older rules, and Florida's code asks for it to be brought up to date.

Re-nailing and sealing a Reddick deck
Section R908.7 applies whenever the covering comes off a house with a wood deck. The deck's fastening has to meet R908.7.1, and a secondary water barrier has to go down under R908.7.2 before the new roof. The re-nailing table is specific: staples or 6d nails at any spacing get supplemental ring-shank nails no more than 6 inches apart, while a deck already held by 8d nails at 6 inches or closer needs nothing added.
Those two upgrades are also what insurers grade. The state wind mitigation form asks how the deck is attached, in steps from staples or 6d nails up to 8d nails at 6 inches in the field, and whether a sealed roof deck is present; standard underlayment or hot-mopped felt alone does not count as one. A Reddick re-roof done to code can change both answers on the next report.

Permits
Before a Reddick re-roof starts
- Ask the Town of Reddick which office issues re-roof permits for your address; the town's website does not say.
- Count the layers. Two or more existing layers, a water-soaked or worn-out base, or tile underneath means a full tear-off (R908.3).
- Find the code era of the last roof. If it was built to the 2007 code or later, in force from March 1, 2009, a partial replacement only has to bring the new part up to code; if not, more than 25 percent in 12 months means the whole section (R908.1.1).
- Watch the calendar: the Ninth Edition of the state code governs any application filed from December 31, 2026 on.
- Read the contract notices. Section 489.147 requires a rebate notice and a bold notice to check coverage with your insurer if the work relates to a claim.
Mobile homes, 22.4 percent of Reddick's housing, are a separate case. The R908.7 deck rules are written for houses with sawn-lumber, plank or wood-structural-panel decks, and the state's My Safe Florida Home grants cover only site-built homes.
Questions
Roof replacement in Reddick: questions
What does the Ninth Edition mean for a Reddick re-roof?
It changes the rulebook for applications filed on or after December 31, 2026; everything filed before that date stays under the 2023 Eighth Edition, which took effect December 31, 2023. A permit also has to be used: under FBC-Building 105.4.1 it becomes invalid if work does not start within 6 months of issue. Because Reddick's permitting office could not be confirmed from the town's website, ask the Town of Reddick early if a filing date matters to you.

Can a general contractor re-roof my Reddick house?
Not with its own crew, unless it also holds roofing credentials. Under section 489.113(3), a general, building or residential contractor must subcontract roofing work unless it holds a roofing certificate or registration; its one carve-out, installing shingles itself, applies only to a new building of its own construction. A roofing contractor's scope, by statute, includes roof-deck attachment and repairing or replacing wood sheathing or fascia during a re-roof, the work R908.7 calls for on Reddick's older decks, 64.8 percent of which predate 2000.

Does a Reddick re-roof have to add hurricane straps?
Only in limited cases. Florida's statute requires improved roof-to-wall connections during a re-roof only in the wind-borne debris region, on homes above a set value, and only when the work at gable ends or corners can be done for 15 percent of the re-roof's cost. The wind-borne debris region inland is set by design wind speed, and Marion County's own figure could not be read from its Building Safety pages, so ask the permitting office. The wind mitigation form still grades the connection, from toenails through clips and wraps to structural anchors.
