Gutters in Howey-in-the-Hills, FL

In a 10-year storm, the heaviest five minutes of rain at Howey-in-the-Hills fall at 9.19 inches an hour (NOAA Atlas 14), against 9.55 at The Villages, the default point for Lake County. Gutters in Howey-in-the-Hills have to move that water off roofs in a hilly town on Little Lake Harris, and set it down at least a foot from the wall.

Local know-how

Rain numbers for Howey-in-the-Hills, and what they do to a gutter

Atlas 14's point inside town gives 9.19 inches an hour for the five-minute burst in a 10-year storm, 10.6 in a 25-year storm and 12.6 in a 100-year storm. The one-hour rates are far lower, 2.84 inches at 10 years and 3.91 at 100 years. Sizing on the one-hour figure instead of the five-minute burst changes the roof area a gutter can serve by more than double.

Leesburg's NOAA normals station, on Howey's nearby list, averages 43.78 inches of rain a year, with 19.49 of them in June through August. Those summer months overlap hurricane season, when storms like Irma left 10.13 inches at Leesburg.

The town's name comes from its hills, which founder William John Howey called "The Florida Alps," and it sits on Little Lake Harris. On sloping lots the downspout outlet matters: Florida code requires every downspout to discharge at least 1 foot from the sidewall, through underground piping, a tail extension or a splash block (FBC-R R318.5; FBC-B 1503.7).

Install

Hangers, joints and fascia on a Howey gutter run

Gutters on a house must be metal or approved plastic, with lapped, soldered or caulked joints, and fastened with corrosion-resistant hardware that matches the gutter metal (FBC-R R903.4.2). One hidden-hanger maker spaces hangers 24 inches apart as standard and recommends 16 inches with clips where storms are common, for added uplift resistance. Milton's 72-knot gust at Leesburg's airport is the kind of load that spacing is for.

A gutter is only as solid as the board behind it. Florida's contractor law lets a roofing contractor repair or replace fascia as needed during roof work, and the specialty structure contractor scope lists siding, soffit, fascia and gutters (Fla. Admin. Code R. 61G4-15.015). On the 55.8% of Howey homes built before 2000, check the fascia before hanging new gutters on it. More on gutters.

Questions

Gutters in Howey-in-the-Hills: questions

What size gutters does a Howey-in-the-Hills house need?

It depends on the roof's area and the rain rate you design for, so no single size fits every house. The plumbing code rates a 6-inch half-round gutter at 110 gallons a minute and a 5-inch at 74, both at 1/8-inch slope. The town's five-minute, 10-year burst is 9.19 inches an hour, close to the 9.55 used for The Villages, where the sourced math has a 6-inch half-round serving about 1,107 square feet on that burst basis. Bigger roofs need more downspouts or a larger profile.

When do gutters in Howey-in-the-Hills clog?

Mostly in two seasons. UF/IFAS puts Florida's pollen season from January to June with a peak in March and April, led by oaks and pines, and pine needles fall hardest from September through November. A cleaning after the spring drop, another before summer and a third after the needles fits that calendar, and a Florida insurer recommends at least spring and fall. The pre-summer cleaning matters most here: Leesburg's normals put 19.49 inches of rain in June through August.

Why don't all Howey-in-the-Hills homes have gutters?

Because the code requires them only on short eaves. FBC-R R318.5 calls for gutters with downspouts where eaves project less than 6 inches, apart from gable-end rakes and a roof above another roof, so a house with deeper eaves meets the code without them. Owners add them for what the code does not cover: where the water lands. Even a mild storm moves a lot of it; Nicole dropped 2.37 inches at Leesburg in 2022.
