Gutters in Oviedo, FL
In a 10-year storm, rain can fall in Oviedo at 8.87 inches an hour for five minutes, and 12.1 in a 100-year storm. Those bursts decide whether a gutter keeps up or spills over the fascia. Size the gutters and downspouts for the burst, then check where the water lands.

Rainfall here
How hard it rains and what that does to gutters
The short burst matters more than the daily total. A 1-hour rain in a 10-year storm runs 2.92 inches an hour, and a 100-year 24-hour rain reaches 11.1 inches. The gutter has to pass the first five minutes of that, before the roof has finished shedding the first wave.

Nearby Orlando Sanford records 49.63 inches of rain a year, with 22.25 inches falling from June through August. That is about 45 percent of the year in three months. Gutters here work hardest in the summer, so check them in spring.
The plumbing code ties horizontal gutter size to the flow off the roof. A 5-inch half-round carries 74 gallons a minute at a slight slope, and a 6-inch carries 110. That is about 49 percent more for one size step. On a large roof, the upgrade often decides whether the water stays in the gutter.
Code and drainage
Downspout rules and where the water goes
Florida Building Code requires gutters with downspouts on buildings whose eaves project less than 6 inches, with exceptions at gable rakes and roofs above another roof. The outlet has to land at least 1 foot from the sidewall. Underground piping, tail extensions and splash blocks all count.
About 78.1 percent of Oviedo's housing units are single-family detached houses, so most roofs here shed water onto a yard on all sides. Point each downspout toward open lawn, away from the slab. The 1-foot minimum is a floor, so go farther where the lot slopes toward the house.
Seminole County water is a larger share of the county area, 10.4 percent, than Oviedo's own 1.8 percent. Ian also flooded the Little and Big Econlockhatchee Rivers near Oviedo in 2022. Gutters do not stop river flooding, but a downspout that dumps beside the foundation adds to the problem.
Upkeep
Leaves, trees and how often to clean
Southern live oaks reach 60 to 80 feet with a 60 to 120 foot spread, and their leaves are a known litter problem. Florida pollen season runs January to June and peaks in March and April, with oaks among the major producers. Expect a heavy load of debris in the gutters each spring.
Pine needles drop heaviest in the autumn months, September through November. A workable rhythm under oaks and pines is late April or May, again before June storms, and after the autumn needle peak. Clean more often under heavy canopy. Gutters must be metal or approved plastic, with corrosion-resistant fasteners.
The median Oviedo home dates to 1997, which suggests many original gutters and hangers are now well past 25 years old. Granules collecting in the gutters are one sign a shingle roof is aging. Ask Oviedo's building department whether your work needs a permit.

Questions
Gutters in Oviedo: questions
How much rain should Oviedo gutters handle?
Size them for the burst, not the yearly total. At Oviedo, a 10-year storm drops rain at 8.87 inches an hour over five minutes, and a 100-year storm at 12.1. A 1-hour 10-year rain runs 2.92 inches an hour. The plumbing code ties gutter size to the flow off the roof, so a larger roof or steeper pitch pushes you toward a bigger gutter and more downspouts.

How far must a downspout discharge from my house?
At least 1 foot from the sidewall. Florida Building Code allows underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks to do it. The rule sits in a termite-protection section. About 78.1 percent of Oviedo housing units are single-family detached, so most lots have room to run water well past that minimum toward open lawn.

Does Oviedo require gutters on a house?
The code requires gutters with downspouts where eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable end rakes or on a roof above another roof. Houses with wider eaves are not covered by that rule. Oviedo's median home dates to 1997, so many original roofs have eaves built to older habits. Oviedo's building department handles roof permits, so confirm with them before you plan work.

How often should I clean gutters under oak trees?
Plan on two cleanings a year at minimum, with more under heavy canopy. In Central Florida, a sensible rhythm is late April or May after the oak leaf drop and pollen, before June storms, and after the autumn pine-needle peak. Seminole County sees about 22 inches of rain from June through August, so clear gutters before then.

Do gutter guards remove the need to clean?
No. Consumer Reports found fine-mesh screens outperformed larger-hole screens, but even the top-scoring screen was only middling in a severe downpour, and inserts performed poorly. Screens may still need brushing in high-pollen areas. Oviedo sits in that situation: Seminole County gets about 49.63 inches of rain a year at Orlando Sanford, with oaks shedding heavily each spring.
