Gutters in Venice, FL
NOAA's 1991-2020 normals put Venice's yearly rain at 51.27 inches, more than the 49.05 at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. Gutters in Venice carry most of it in summer, when about 60% of the year's rain falls, and in bursts that NOAA Atlas 14 rates at 10.5 inches an hour at the center of the city.

Local know-how
Fifty-one inches, mostly in summer
The National Weather Service dates Southwest Florida's rainy season from May 15 to October 15, with near-daily thunderstorms. At the Census point in the middle of Venice, NOAA Atlas 14 rates a 10-year, five-minute burst at 10.5 inches an hour, a 25-year burst at 12 inches an hour and a 100-year burst at 14.3. A 10-year day there drops 6.62 inches.
Storm totals dwarf a normal day. Helene pushed 4 to 6 feet of inundation from Venice south past Englewood in 2024, and Milton's surge followed. Gutters cannot stop surge, but they decide where the roof's own water goes when the ground is already soaked.
Sizing
Gutter and downspout sizes for 10.5-inch bursts
Florida's plumbing code rates a 6-inch half-round gutter at 110 gallons a minute and a 5-inch one at 74, both at 1/8 inch per foot of slope (FBC-P Table 1106.6). A 4-by-5-inch or 5-inch round downspout carries 360 gallons a minute, and a 3-by-4-1/4-inch or 4-inch round one 192 (Table 1106.3).
Downspouts must discharge at least 1 foot from the building, by underground pipe, a tail extension or a splash block (FBC-R R318.5). On Venice Island, reached by bridges over the Intracoastal Waterway, plan where that water runs before the gutters go up.
Rain on your roof
Preset: 6.62 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Venice).
8,249 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.
Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.
Coast
Hangers, fasteners and Gulf air
Milton's 93-knot gust at Venice Beach is the kind of load gutter hangers face. One hidden-hanger maker uses 24-inch spacing as standard but recommends 16-inch spacing with clips for coastal and storm-prone areas.
Florida's residential code wants gutters of metal or approved plastic, joints that are lapped, soldered or caulked, and fasteners of a compatible, corrosion-resistant material (FBC-R R903.4.2). FEMA finds corrosion worst within 3,000 feet of the ocean, so on the island, match the fasteners to the gutter metal.
Questions
Gutters in Venice: questions
What size gutters does a Venice home need?
Size to the burst, not the yearly total. At the center of Venice, NOAA Atlas 14 puts a 10-year, five-minute storm at 10.5 inches an hour. A 6-inch half-round gutter carries about 49% more than a 5-inch one at the same slope, 110 against 74 gallons a minute (FBC-P Table 1106.6). Long runs, steep slopes or valleys that empty into one corner push a Venice roof toward 6-inch gutters and more downspouts.

Where should downspouts drain on Venice Island?
At least 1 foot from the wall, by the code, and toward ground that carries water away from the house (FBC-R R318.5). Underground pipes, tail extensions and splash blocks all satisfy the rule. Venice Island is reached by bridges over the Intracoastal Waterway, and Helene's 2024 surge reached 5.71 feet above mean higher high water at the fishing pier, so map the low spots near the slab before the downspouts are placed.

When should Venice gutters be cleaned?
Before June, and again after the fall needle drop. UF/IFAS puts Florida's pollen peak in March and April and the heaviest pine-needle fall in September through November, and Tower Hill, a Florida insurer, advises cleaning at least twice a year, more under trees. In Venice about 60% of a normal year's 51.27 inches arrives June through September, so the spring cleaning is the one not to skip.
