Gutters in Laurel, FL

A 10-year storm drops rain on Laurel at 10.4 inches an hour for five minutes, and 100-year bursts reach 14.1. Whether a gutter overflows comes down to that rate, and the yearly total has little say in it. From that figure follow the gutter size, the downspout size and the spot where the water ends up.

Rainfall and capacity

How Laurel's rain sizes a gutter

Over a full hour, a 10-year storm in Laurel falls at 3.08 inches an hour, and a 100-year storm at 4.3. The short burst is the harder test. A gutter that copes with the hourly rate can still spill during the 5-minute peak at 10.4 inches an hour.

Capacity numbers show why size matters. Under the plumbing code table, a 5 inch half-round gutter at 1/8 inch per foot slope carries 74 gpm, and a 6 inch carries 110. At the same slope, the 6 inch carries roughly 49 percent more water, by our arithmetic. Where a roof is large or the burst rate is the design basis, that gap decides whether water stays in the gutter.

Downspouts limit the system too. A 2 1/2 by 3 inch leader is listed in the code at 92 gpm, and a 3 by 4 1/4 inch leader at 192 gpm. A long run of gutter feeding one small downspout can overflow even when the gutter itself is large enough.

Discharge rules

Where the water from your downspouts ends up on a Laurel lot

Laurel's homes are mostly single-family detached, 69.7 percent of housing units, so most roofs shed water onto a yard rather than a shared paved edge. The Florida Building Code, Residential section R318.5, says downspouts must discharge at least 1 foot from the sidewall, by piping, tail extensions or splash blocks.

Under that same section, gutters with downspouts are required wherever eaves project under 6 inches, other than at gable end rakes or on a roof sitting above another roof. Water covers 11.0 percent of Laurel's area, and Myakka River flooding followed both Ian and Debby, so a lot that already holds water should send downspout flow well clear of the foundation.

Maintenance

Leaves, pollen and cleaning times

Southern live oaks reach 60 to 80 feet and drop leaves that the University of Florida calls a litter problem. From January to June is pollen season, with the heaviest stretch in March and April. A sensible rhythm is a cleaning after the late April or May oak drop, one before the June through September storm season, and one after autumn pine needle fall.

About 60 percent of Sarasota County's rain falls June through September, so a clogged gutter in May meets the heaviest months. Fine-mesh screens did better than coarse ones in Consumer Reports testing, yet still needed brushing in high-pollen areas.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 6.63 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Laurel).

8,261 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Laurel: questions

How hard does it rain in Laurel, FL?

A 10-year storm falls at 10.4 inches an hour over five minutes, and a 100-year storm at 14.1. Over a full hour the 10-year rate is 3.08 inches. Over 24 hours a 10-year storm drops 6.63 inches, and a 100-year storm 11.3. Venice sees a normal annual rainfall of 51.27 inches, and about 60 percent of it arrives from June through September. Gutters are sized for the short burst, not the yearly total.

How far from the house must a downspout discharge?

At least 1 foot from the sidewall. Section R318.5 of the Florida Building Code, Residential, lets you handle that with underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks. Under that same section, gutters with downspouts are required wherever eaves project under 6 inches, other than at gable end rakes or on a roof sitting above another roof. Ask Sarasota County Planning and Development Services about your lot.

What size gutter and downspout does a Laurel roof need?

The answer turns on your roof area and the rain rate. The 5-minute, 10-year rate here is 10.4 inches an hour. Code capacities run from 74 gpm for a 5 inch half-round at 1/8 inch per foot slope to 110 gpm for a 6 inch. Downspouts carry 92 gpm at 2 1/2 by 3 inch and 192 gpm at 3 by 4 1/4 inch. Larger roofs and the burst rate point toward the larger sizes.

How often should I clean gutters under oaks in Laurel?

Plan on cleaning no less than twice a year, in spring and fall, and more often if heavy canopy hangs over the roof. Live oaks reach 60 to 80 feet and drop leaves, and pollen peaks in March and April. Clean after the late April or May leaf drop and again before storm season, which brings about 60 percent of Sarasota County's rain June through September.
