Gutters in South Venice, FL
In South Venice, a 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 10.5 inches an hour, and a 100-year burst reaches 14.3. Your gutters have to move that water off a roof in seconds. Size, slope and downspout count decide whether they do.

Rainfall and sizing
Rainfall intensity and the way it drives gutter sizing
What counts most is how hard the rain falls in a short burst, not how much falls over the whole day. A 1-hour rain in a 10-year storm here runs 3.12 inches an hour, and 24-hour depth is 6.65 inches. The 5-minute rate of 10.5 is more than three times the hourly rate, so a gutter sized for average rain overflows first.

Florida plumbing code gives gutter capacity in gallons per minute. At a slope of 1/8 inch per foot, a 5 inch half-round gutter moves 74 gpm, while a 6 inch gutter moves 110. By our arithmetic, that is about 49 percent more for the 6 inch, which is why larger gutters suit roofs with long runs in a rain like South Venice's.
Downspouts set the limit too. A 2 1/2 by 3 inch leader carries 92 gpm, while a 3 by 4 1/4 inch leader handles 192 gpm. Pitched roofs also count extra area, up to 1.30 times plan area at a 12 in 12 pitch, and any wall that sheds rain onto the roof adds half its area.
Florida Building Code
Code rules for downspout discharge here
Eaves that project less than 6 inches need gutters and downspouts, but the rakes along gable ends and any roof that sits above another roof are exempt. In South Venice, 92 percent of housing units are single-family detached, so most owners face this rule on their own house.
Water from downspouts has to be released at least 1 foot away from the sidewall, using underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks. The rule sits in a termite-protection section, so water dumped at the foundation is a pest problem as well as a leak problem.
Acceptable gutter materials are metal or approved plastic, and the joints must be lapped, soldered or caulked, with fasteners that resist corrosion. Sarasota County Planning and Development Services handles permits here. Ask that office directly if the gutter work you have planned requires one.
Debris and drainage
Leaves, trees and where the water goes
Water covers 6.1 percent of South Venice's area, and Myakka River flooding in 2022 and 2024 shows how wet the ground can get. Saturated soil next to a slab makes a 1 foot discharge distance a minimum, not a target.
Live oaks reach 60 to 80 feet tall with a spread of 60 to 120 feet, and their leaves are a litter problem. Pine needle drop peaks between September and November. A sensible schedule is one cleaning once the spring oak drop ends, one ahead of June, and one after the autumn needle peak.
About 60 percent of Sarasota-area rain falls June through September, so clogged gutters hurt most just when the downpours arrive. Fine-mesh screens beat coarse ones in independent testing, though they still need brushing in pollen season.

Questions
Gutters in South Venice: questions
How big should gutters be in South Venice?
Start from the rain. South Venice sees 10.5 inches an hour in a 5-minute, 10-year burst, and 14.3 in a 100-year burst. Under Florida plumbing code a 5 inch half-round carries 74 gpm and a 6 inch carries 110, so many long roof runs here suit the 6 inch size. Downspout count and size matter just as much, so have the roof area measured before you choose.

How far from my house must a downspout drain?
At least 1 foot from the sidewall. Under Florida Building Code Residential R318.5, that discharge distance can be met with underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks. Sarasota County Planning and Development Services is the permit office for South Venice, so ask it about local drainage conditions. Since 83.3 percent of homes here are owner-occupied, most fixes are the homeowner's call.

Are gutters required on South Venice homes?
Often yes. Buildings with eaves projecting under 6 inches need gutters and downspouts under the code, apart from gable end rakes and roofs above another roof. With a median build year of 1984 and 92 percent single-family detached homes, many South Venice houses have wide eaves or older setups, so check your eave projection and confirm with the county building office.

How often should I clean gutters near oaks and pines?
Plan on two cleanings a year at minimum, one in spring and one in fall, with extra visits if heavy trees overhang the roof. Live oak leaves are a litter problem, and pine needle fall peaks September through November. With about 60 percent of Sarasota rainfall coming June through September, clean before June and again after the autumn needle peak.
