Gutters in Delray Beach, FL

NOAA Atlas 14 puts a 10-year, 5-minute downpour at the center of Delray Beach at 11.0 inches an hour, close to the 11.3 it gives at West Palm Beach, the wettest of the ten Florida points in our rainfall table. Gutters here have to carry that burst, and every downspout has to empty at least a foot from the wall.

Local know-how

11 inches an hour on a Delray Beach roof edge

Rarer storms push the Atlas 14 numbers higher: 13 inches an hour for the 25-year, 5-minute burst and 16 for the 100-year, and a 10-year day drops 8.72 inches. In a normal year, West Palm Beach International Airport gets 61.75 inches on 86.1 days of a tenth of an inch or more.

The median Delray Beach home dates to 1983, three years older than the county's, so many gutters hang on old fascia; check the board before a new run goes up on it.

Code and hardware

Downspouts, fasteners and hangers for Delray Beach gutters

Under R318.5, a house whose eaves overhang less than 6 inches must have gutters and downspouts, with gable-end rakes and roofs above other roofs excepted. The same section, which sits among the code's termite-protection rules, sends every downspout's water at least 1 foot out from the wall by underground pipe, tail extension or splash block.

R903.4.2 asks for metal or an approved plastic rated for outdoor use, joints that are lapped, soldered or caulked, and fasteners that resist corrosion and match the gutter metal. Hardware choice weighs more near the coast, where FEMA says metal corrosion is worst, within 3,000 feet of the ocean. For hangers, one hidden-hanger maker gives 24 inches on center as its standard spacing and 16 inches, with clips, for coastal and storm-prone areas.

Rain on your roof

Rain on your roof

Preset: 8.72 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Delray Beach).

10,865 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Delray Beach: questions

How many downspouts does a Delray Beach house need?

Enough that each one carries the roof area above it in an 11-inch-an-hour burst. The plumbing code's leader table rates a 3-inch round downspout at 92 gallons a minute and a 4-inch round at 192 (Table 1106.3). At Delray Beach's Atlas 14 rate of 11.0 inches an hour, that works out to roughly 800 and 1,680 square feet of roof plan area per downspout, by our arithmetic with the 96.15-square-foot conversion, before any pitch factor.

Are gutter guards worth it in Delray Beach rain?

They cut debris, but they do not change how much water a gutter can carry. In Consumer Reports testing, fine-mesh screens outperformed screens with larger holes, yet even the top-scoring screen was only middling at containing a severe downpour. Delray Beach's 10-year, 5-minute burst is 11.0 inches an hour by NOAA Atlas 14, so the gutter and downspout size still has to fit that rate. Guards may still need brushing in high-pollen areas, and on one of the 11.7% of Delray Beach homes held for seasonal use, someone has to be there to do it.
