Gutters in McIntosh, FL
Marion County's NOAA station in Ocala averages 21.42 inches of rain in June, July and August, and NOAA Atlas 14 puts a 10-year, five-minute burst at McIntosh at 9.59 inches an hour. At that rate every 1,000 square feet of roof sheds about 100 gallons a minute, and that is the flow a gutter has to keep up with.

Sizing
From roof area to gallons a minute in McIntosh
The conversion gutter makers publish is simple: 96.15 square feet of roof under an inch of rain an hour yields one gallon a minute. Multiply by McIntosh's burst rate and a 1,000-square-foot roof face, measured flat, sends about 100 gallons a minute to its gutter.
Pitch raises the design area. Gutter makers multiply plan area by 1.05 for a 4- or 5-inch rise per foot, 1.10 for 6 to 8 inches, 1.20 for 9 to 11 and 1.30 for 12. At 1.10, that same face counts as 1,100 square feet and about 110 gallons a minute, right at what the plumbing code's table gives a 6-inch half-round gutter at an eighth-inch slope. A 5-inch gutter, rated at 74, tops out near 742 square feet of plan area at this rate.
Discharge and upkeep
Getting McIntosh roof water away from the house
Florida's residential code requires gutters only where eaves project less than 6 inches, but wherever downspouts are used, they must discharge at least 1 foot from the wall, by underground pipe, extension or splash block (R318.5), a rule Florida placed in the termite-protection part of its code. With Orange Lake on the town's east side, the slope of each yard decides where that water goes next, so look at the grade before choosing where downspouts land.
Gutters and downspouts must be metal or approved plastic, with lapped, soldered or caulked joints and corrosion-resistant fasteners that match (R903.4.2). On McIntosh's older houses, with a median year of 1977 and 83.1 percent built before 2000, check the fascia behind any gutter that is pulling away; in Florida, fascia can be repaired or replaced as needed during roof work.

Debris is the other half of upkeep. Southern live oaks shed leaves and fruit that UF/IFAS calls a litter problem, pollen peaks in March and April, and pine needles drop most in autumn, September through November.

Questions
Gutters in McIntosh: questions
Is it bad for a McIntosh house to have no gutters?
Not by code, if the eaves are deep. Florida requires gutters only on buildings with eaves under 6 inches, apart from gable rakes and roofs above other roofs (R318.5). Without them, though, every inch of rain lands at the drip line, and Marion County's Ocala station averages 51.64 inches a year. Grading that slopes away from the walls and splash protection at the drip line matter more on a house without gutters. Where gutters are added, the code's 1-foot discharge rule applies to every downspout.

Do gutter guards work under McIntosh's oaks?
They help, with limits. In Consumer Reports' testing, fine-mesh screens outperformed screens with larger holes, but even the top-scoring screen was only middling at holding a severe downpour, inserts did poorly, and guards still needed brushing in high-pollen areas. That matters where oak pollen peaks in March and April and Ocala's NOAA station averages 21.42 inches of summer rain. Tower Hill, a Florida insurer, suggests cleaning gutters at least twice a year, more often under overhanging trees, and guarded gutters still need that check.

How many downspouts does a McIntosh gutter run need?
Enough that each one stays under its rating. The plumbing code rates a 3-inch round downspout at 92 gallons a minute and a 4-inch round one at 192. At McIntosh's Atlas 14 burst of 9.59 inches an hour, a little under NOAA's 9.71 for Ocala, that works out by our arithmetic to roughly 920 and 1,925 square feet of flat roof area per downspout. Splitting a long run with a downspout at each end halves the area each one drains.
