Gutters in Brandon, FL

Water covers 5.3 percent of the Brandon area, 1.86 square miles of it, and NOAA Atlas 14 puts a 10-year, five-minute downpour at the community's Census point at 9.61 inches an hour. Gutters here are sized for that burst; downspouts decide where the water lands.

Local know-how

How hard Brandon's storms rain

The same NOAA point gives 12.7 inches an hour for the 100-year, five-minute burst and 4.06 for the 100-year hour, the rate the plumbing code uses for drains. A 10-year day brings 6.23 inches and a 100-year day 11.1. The nearest NOAA normals station in our data, Tampa International Airport, averages 49.48 inches a year.

Storms test that sizing. Eta left up to 10.64 inches near Sun City Center in 2020, and Debby dropped 10 to 15 inches locally near and south of Tampa Bay in 2024.

Code and upkeep

Gutter rules and upkeep for Brandon homes

The residential code makes gutters mandatory only on eaves that stick out less than 6 inches, sparing gable rakes and roofs above other roofs (R318.5). If a downspout exists, it must put water at least 1 foot from the house through an extension, a splash block or an underground line, a requirement found in the code's termite-protection section. Hillsborough County enforces both rules for every Brandon address.

Fascia rot behind an old gutter is roof-edge work: Florida lets a roofing contractor repair or replace fascia as needed during a roof job, and the state's specialty structure contractor scope lists siding, soffit, fascia and gutters together. On a house built around 1993, Brandon's median year, check the fascia behind the gutter for soft or stained wood.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 6.23 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Brandon).

7,763 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Brandon: questions

How big should gutters be on a Brandon home?

Big enough for the roof area each run drains at the burst rate. At Brandon's Atlas 14 figure of 9.61 inches an hour for a 10-year, five-minute storm, our arithmetic on the plumbing code's table gives about 740 square feet of roof plan area for a 5-inch half-round gutter and about 1,101 for a 6-inch, both at 1/8-inch slope. The 6-inch carries about 49 percent more water at the same slope. Steeper roofs add area through a pitch factor.

When do Brandon gutters clog the most?

Twice a year, mostly. UF/IFAS puts Florida's pollen season from January to June, peaking in March and April, with oaks among the big producers, and southern live oak leaves and fruit are a known litter problem. Needle drop from pines peaks in autumn, September through November. Tower Hill, a Florida insurer, recommends cleaning at least in spring and fall. Since about 61 percent of the 49.48 inches Tampa International Airport sees in a normal year falls June through September, clear Brandon gutters before June.
