Gutters in Mango, FL

In Mango, a 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 9.61 inches an hour, and a 100-year storm reaches 12.7. Gutters and downspouts here have to carry that water away fast. Sizing and discharge rules matter more in this town than the look of the gutter.

Sizing for local rain

Sizing gutters for Mango's 10-year rain

Plumbing code sizes gutters by the flow the roof sends into them, so the rain rate you pick changes the answer. The plumbing table uses a 6-inch half-round gutter at 1/8 inch per foot slope to carry 110 gallons per minute. By our arithmetic, that is about 49 percent more than the 74 gallons a 5-inch gutter carries at the same slope.

A 2-by-2-inch downspout carries 30 gallons per minute, and a 3-inch round one carries 92. Where a wall above the roof sheds water onto the roof, the code adds half that wall's area to the roof area. Count that wall in your sizing, or water will overshoot the gutter at the valley.

Older sizing tables for Tampa used a 10-year burst of 8.3 inches an hour, based on records through 1978. The 9.61 figure above is the current Atlas 14 value for this town, and it runs higher. Ask your installer which rate the job was sized on.

Hillsborough County gets a normal 49.48 inches of rain a year at Tampa International Airport, and about 61 percent of it falls June through September. Rainfall in Plant City, which sits in the county's east end, averages roughly 56.1 inches a year. Your gutters do most of their work in those four summer months.

Discharge rules

Where downspout water has to go on a Mango lot

Florida's residential code sets a clear floor for downspout placement: water must leave the sidewall by at least 1 foot. Mango lots with slab-on-grade homes often sit close to the wall, so check the discharge point after every heavy storm.

Gutters are required on homes whose eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable end rakes or where a roof sits above another roof. If your eave is shallow, a gutter is not optional under the code.

Debris and upkeep

Leaves, pine needles and cleaning in Mango

Southern live oaks in Central Florida drop leaves that become a litter problem, and a mature tree can reach 60 to 80 feet with a spread of 60 to 120 feet. Pollen runs January to June, peaking in March and April, and oaks are among its major producers. Pine needles keep falling into autumn, mostly in the months from September through November.

Under oaks and pines, clean after the spring leaf and pollen drop in late April or May, before the June to September rain season, and after the autumn needle peak. Clean more often under a heavy canopy. An insurer's guidance says twice a year at least, and more often with overhanging trees.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 6.31 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Mango).

7,862 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Mango: questions

How heavy is the rain in Mango for gutter sizing?

A 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 9.61 inches an hour here. The 25-year rate is 10.9 inches an hour, and the 100-year rate is 12.7. A 24-hour rain in a 10-year storm totals 6.31 inches, and a 100-year storm totals 11.3 inches. Sizing a gutter to the 10-year burst keeps water inside the trough during most storms. Ask your installer which rate the job used.

Do gutters need to be required on a Mango home?

Florida's residential code requires gutters with downspouts on homes whose eaves project less than 6 inches. In Mango, 23.1 percent of housing units are mobile homes, so many of these roofs have shallow or unusual eaves. The rule does not apply at gable end rakes or where a roof sits above another roof. Check your eave depth before you decide.

How far should a downspout discharge from a Mango house?

Code calls for a minimum of 1 foot of clearance from the sidewall. In Mango, the median home was built in 1989, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 years, so many downspouts here sit on original installations. Check that the discharge point still clears the wall after every heavy rain. Repair any runoff that pools against the foundation.

How often should gutters be cleaned under oaks in Mango?

Clean at least twice a year, in spring and fall, and more often under overhanging trees. Southern live oaks drop leaves that become a litter problem, and pollen peaks in March and April. In Mango, 56.5 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, so most of these gutters are the owner's responsibility to clean. Clean before the June to September rain season.
