Gutters in Tamarac, FL

In a 10-year storm, rain in Tamarac can fall at 10.6 inches an hour for five minutes, and that burst is the number that sizes your gutters. Most Tamarac homes were built around 1981, so many gutters and downspouts are older than the rain they now face. Gutter capacity, downspout size and where the water lands all affect whether a heavy storm stays off your walls and foundation.

Sizing for local rain

Sizing Tamarac gutters for a 10-year downpour

Gutter size follows the rate of rain, not only the roof area. Here the design rate is high. A 1-hour, 10-year storm falls at 3.39 inches an hour, and a 24-hour, 10-year storm drops 8.69 inches in total. Those numbers are why a gutter that works on a drier coast can overflow here.

The plumbing code sizes horizontal gutters from the flow off the roof, and a 6-inch half-round carries about 49 percent more than a 5-inch at the same slope. That gap is large enough to matter on a roof with a long run. Downspouts are sized the same way, so a single 2 by 3 inch leader may not carry a steep roof's flow alone.

  • Ask whether the gutter is 5-inch or 6-inch half-round, and the slope it was set at.
  • Count the downspouts against the roof area that drains to each one.
  • Check whether a wall above the roof sheds rain onto it, since that area adds to the load.

Keep water off the foundation

Where Tamarac downspouts must send water

Florida's residential code requires downspouts to discharge at least 1 foot from the sidewall, whether through underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks. On a lot with a slab or a low side yard, a downspout that dumps at the wall sends water toward the foundation, so this rule matters most on those lots.

Gutters on one- and two-family homes must be metal or approved plastic with sealed joints and corrosion-resistant fasteners. Under a heavy downpour, a loose hanger or a leaking joint is the first place water escapes, so a visual check after each wet season is worth doing.

Clearing debris before storms

Leaves, trees and cleaning in Tamarac

Live oaks drop litter, and a 60 to 80 foot tree can drop it across a wide area, so gutters under them clog faster. Pine needles and pollen add to the load in spring and autumn, and the storm season runs from June 1 through November 30.

A practical rhythm is cleaning after the spring oak drop and pollen, before the June through September rains, and after the autumn needle fall. Tower Hill Insurance Group advises cleaning at least twice a year, and more often under overhanging trees. Keep the work on the ground where possible, because lightning can strike miles from a storm and the National Weather Service says not to work on a roof while thunder is audible.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 8.69 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Tamarac).

10,828 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Tamarac: questions

How much rain should Tamarac gutters handle?

Design for the heavy burst, not the daily average. In a 10-year storm, rain can fall at 10.6 inches an hour for five minutes, and at 3.39 inches an hour over one hour. A gutter sized only for a light rain will overflow in these storms. Ask your contractor which rainfall basis they used, and confirm the size against the plumbing code tables.

Where should downspouts send the water in Tamarac?

Code sets one minimum for every Florida downspout: 1 foot of distance from the sidewall. In Tamarac, where a 24-hour, 10-year storm drops 8.69 inches, that distance keeps a large volume of water off the slab and footings. Underground piping, a tail extension or a splash block can all meet the rule. It applies to new gutters and to reworked systems.

How often should I clean gutters under oak trees here?

Clean at least twice a year, in spring and fall, and more often under heavy canopy. Tamarac's Live oaks shed litter, and in a 60-inch rain year like Fort Lauderdale's 60.95 inches of normal rain, debris washes into gutters quickly. Pollen peaks in March and April. Tower Hill Insurance Group advises the same spring and fall schedule, and clogged gutters can lead to water damage, mold and foundation problems.

Who may do gutter work on my Tamarac home?

Florida code lists gutters within the specialty structure contractor scope, so confirm the contractor's license with the state licensing board before work starts. Broward practice differs on whether a separate gutter license applies, so ask the City of Tamarac permit office what the current rule is for your job.
