Gutters in Coral Springs, FL
NOAA's Atlas 14 gives Coral Springs a 10-year, five-minute rainfall rate of 10.5 inches an hour, while the county's airport station averages 60.95 inches of rain a year. On a city built over land drained by canals and levees, a gutter's job is to catch that burst and send it where the ground can take it.

Local know-how
Sizing Coral Springs gutters for a 10.5-inch burst
At the city's Census point, the 25-year version of that five-minute burst is 12.2 inches an hour and the 100-year version 15. Hourly rates are lower, 3.32 inches in a 10-year storm and 5.02 in a 100-year one, and a full-day 10-year rain totals 8.34 inches.
Code
Where Coral Springs downspouts should send the water
Florida's code sets the floor: downspouts discharge at least 1 foot from the building's sidewall, through underground pipe, an extension or a splash block (R318.5 and FBC-B 1503.7). Gutters themselves are required only where eaves overhang less than 6 inches, except at gable rakes or a roof above another roof.
In a city laid out on land drained by canals and levees, treat that foot as a minimum and aim each downspout at ground that falls away from the house.

Preset: 8.34 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Coral Springs).
10,392 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Questions
Gutters in Coral Springs: questions
How many downspouts does a Coral Springs house need?
Enough that no stretch of gutter sends more water to one leader than it can carry. At the 10.5 inches an hour NOAA gives Coral Springs for a 10-year, five-minute burst, a 3-inch round downspout handles about 840 square feet of roof plan area and a 4-inch round about 1,760, by the plumbing code's ratings. A roof with 2,000 square feet of plan area would need at least three 3-inch leaders or two 4-inch ones, before adding the pitch factor for steep roofs. On the 48.9 percent of Coral Springs homes that are detached houses, the roof's corners and valley ends are the natural places for them.

When is the rainy season for Coral Springs gutters?
May through October. At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, 71.9 percent of normal annual rain falls in those six months, and June is the wettest month at 9.55 inches. Hurricane season overlaps it from June 1 to November 30. Clear the gutters in late April, after the spring oak and pollen drop that UF/IFAS says peaks in March and April, and check them again after any named storm. Tower Hill, a Florida insurer, recommends at least two cleanings a year and more under overhanging trees.

Do gutter guards keep up with Coral Springs downpours?
Only partly. Consumer Reports' independent tests found that fine-mesh screens outperformed screens with larger holes, but even the top-scoring screen was only middling at containing a severe downpour, and every type still needed some upkeep, such as brushing in high-pollen areas. With 60.95 inches of rain a year at the county's airport station and five-minute bursts of 10.5 inches an hour, a guard can cut cleaning without replacing the need for the right gutter size and enough downspouts.
