Gutters in Pompano Beach, FL

NOAA Atlas 14 puts a 10-year, five-minute downpour at the center of Pompano Beach at 11.0 inches an hour, on top of the 60.95 inches a year Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport averages. Gutters on this coast have to carry that burst, hold on through hurricane wind and stand up to salt air.

Local know-how

How hard it rains on Pompano Beach

The same Atlas 14 point gives 15.9 inches an hour for the 100-year, five-minute burst and 9.35 inches for a 10-year, 24-hour storm. Real storms have topped the 100-year figures: on April 12, 2023, the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood airport gauge caught 6.15 inches in one hour and 25.91 inches in the day, from a storm that was never named.

Old sizing tables undersell that. A SMACNA-style table still reproduced by one gutter maker lists Miami's 10-year, five-minute intensity at 7.7 inches an hour, based on records through 1978, while Atlas 14 now gives Pompano Beach 11.0. Ask which rate a gutter quote is sized to.

Coast

Hangers and salt air on a Pompano gutter

Hangers do the work in hurricane wind. One hidden-hanger maker's standard spacing is 24 inches on center; for coastal and storm-prone areas it recommends its clip option at 16-inch spacing for added uplift resistance, and notes that aluminum resists salt air corrosion. Pompano Beach fronts the Atlantic beside the Hillsboro Inlet, so that coastal advice applies across much of the city.

Building type shapes the job. Single-family detached houses are 29 percent of Pompano's housing units, and 49.6 percent of units are in buildings of 10 or more, where gutters, scuppers and downspouts serve a whole roof at once.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 9.35 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Pompano Beach).

11,650 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Pompano Beach: questions

Should a Pompano Beach home get 5-inch or 6-inch gutters?

Size it to the roof, not to habit. At the same slope, a 6-inch half-round gutter carries about 49 percent more water than a 5-inch one, 110 against 74 gallons a minute in Florida's plumbing code table. Pitch adds load too: the sizing guide Berger publishes multiplies plan area by 1.05 for a 4 or 5 inch rise per foot and by 1.10 for 6 to 8 inches. At Pompano Beach's 11.0 inches an hour, a long, steep roof face draining into one run is where the larger gutter or an extra downspout earns its place.

How often should gutters be cleaned in Pompano Beach?

At least twice a year, spring and fall, by Tower Hill Insurance's guidance, and more often under overhanging trees or after frequent storms. In South Florida that lines up with the pollen season UF/IFAS describes, January to June with a March and April peak and melaleucas among the heavy producers, and with the wet half of the year: 71.9 percent of the Fort Lauderdale airport's normal rainfall arrives from May through October. A clean gutter by June matters most, since hurricane season opens June 1.

Does Florida's code require gutters on a Pompano Beach house?

Only on a house whose eaves project less than 6 inches, under section R318.5 of the Florida Residential Code, with exceptions for gable-end rakes and a roof above another roof. Where gutters are installed, each downspout must discharge at least 1 foot from the wall through a splash block, extension or underground pipe; the rule sits in a termite-protection section of the code. On a deeper overhang gutters are a choice, made to protect walls, beds and entries from storms like the April 2023 rain that put 6.15 inches on the Fort Lauderdale airport gauge in an hour.
