Gutters in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, FL
Lauderdale-by-the-Sea gets a 10-year, 24-hour storm of 9.63 inches of rain, and the same storm drops that depth in a single day. Short bursts within it fall far faster, with a 5-minute, 10-year rate of 11.1 inches an hour. Gutters on this narrow island have to clear water at that pace, not a light steady drizzle.

Sizing the system
How gutters and downspouts are sized for this rain
Gutter size depends on the rain rate and the roof area it drains. The plumbing code sizes horizontal gutters from the flow off the roof surface, and it adds half the area of any wall that sheds rain onto the roof. A half-round 6 inch gutter at 1/8 inch per foot slope carries 110 gallons per minute, about 49 percent more than a 5 inch one at the same slope.

Sizing also depends on which rain rate you design for. By our arithmetic, a 6 inch half-round gutter at 1/8 inch per foot serves about 2,671 square feet of roof on the code's 100-year, 1-hour basis, but only about 1,107 square feet on the 5-minute, 10-year burst. Your installer should name the rate used in their sizing before any work starts.
- Downspouts for a 3 by 4 1/4 inch or 4 inch round leader carry 192 gallons per minute.
- A 2 by 2 inch leader carries only 30 gallons per minute, which is too small for most roof areas here.
- Fine screens and inserts were tested by Consumer Reports and did poorly in severe downpours, so screens do not replace proper size.
Downspout discharge
How to direct runoff away from your property
Florida's residential code requires gutters on buildings whose eaves project less than 6 inches. Each downspout has to carry water clear of the building, using buried pipe, a tail extension or a splash block. On a narrow island lot, water that pools against the foundation can reach the slab. Confirm your lot's drainage with the Town of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Building Division.
Trees and debris
Leaves, pollen and cleaning in this town
Southern live oaks drop litter, and their pollen season runs January to June, peaking in March and April. Needle drop from pines is heaviest in the autumn months. Clean gutters at least twice a year, and more often under heavy canopy, with a clean-out before the June to November storm season.

Questions
Gutters in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea: questions
How much rain do gutters in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea have to handle?
A 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 11.1 inches an hour here. A 25-year rate is 13.1 inches an hour, and a 100-year rate is 16.1. A 24-hour storm of 10-year frequency brings 9.63 inches. Gutters sized for a light rate will overflow in these bursts. Confirm with your installer which rainfall intensity the sizing was based on.

Do gutters and downspouts have to be on my home here?
Under Florida's residential code, a building whose eaves stick out less than 6 inches needs gutters and downspouts, apart from gable end rakes or spots where one roof sits above another. Place the outlet of each downspout a minimum of 1 foot from the sidewall. Check your own eave depth and ask the Town of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea Building Division how the code applies to your home.

How often should gutters be cleaned near oak and pine trees?
Most people who study this suggest gutters be cleaned twice a year, typically in spring and again in fall. In Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, live oak litter and pollen peak in March and April, and the 5-minute, 10-year rain of 11.1 inches an hour arrives in the June to November storm season. A gutter full of oak litter or pine needles cannot move that burst of water, so clean before the season starts.

Are gutters required to be licensed work in Broward County?
Florida's specialty contractor scope lists gutters with siding, soffit and fascia. Whether a state license is required for gutter-only work is not settled in the sources we have. Check your contractor's license with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation before you sign, and confirm local rules with the Broward County building office.
