Roof repair in Gainesville, FL
Hail up to 2.50 inches, tennis-ball size, fell on Gainesville on April 11, 2025, with golf-ball reports across city limits. Roof repair here often follows weather like that, and the real job is finding where the covering failed before the next storm finds it first.

Where Gainesville roofs give way
Wind, not hail, is the everyday threat. NOAA's database ties 22 thunderstorm-wind reports to Gainesville reference points between 2016 and 2025, and the county-wide count is 138. FEMA's team after Hurricane Ian found hips and ridges were the most common damage on newer and older roofs alike, and a lost ridge vent can open the deck to driving rain.
Flashing is the other weak point. The code requires it wherever a roof meets a wall, changes slope or direction, or is cut for a vent or chimney, and those joints are where leaks tend to start. When a ceiling stain appears, check those joints first.
Trees bring their own damage. During Helene in 2024 a tree crushed through a home in Gainesville's Willow Bend neighborhood, and in 2016 Hermine damaged several homes in the city with fallen trees.
Repair or replace
The 25% line on a Gainesville repair
Florida's code caps patching at 25% of a roof or roof section in any 12 months unless the whole section is redone. The exception is a roof built or replaced under the 2007 code or later; then only the repaired part must meet today's code. In a city whose median home dates to 1983, it pays to find the last full re-roof date on the permit record before pricing a large repair.
Small repairs may not need a permit at all, since the code lets the building official approve ordinary minor repairs without one. For a house inside city limits, the City of Gainesville Building Division makes that decision.
Questions
Roof repair in Gainesville: questions
Should I get my roof checked after a Gainesville hail storm?
Yes, and soon. The April 11, 2025 storm dropped hail up to 2.50 inches on Gainesville. The damage list Florida's largest insurer gives roof inspectors includes cracking, excessive granule loss, exposed felt, visible hail damage and leaks seen in the attic or on ceilings. A look within a few weeks gives you a dated record while the cause is still clear, and catches cracked tabs before summer rain finds them.

Why do Gainesville roofs leak at the ridge after a storm?
Because the ridge and hips take the hardest wind. FEMA's assessment after Hurricane Ian found damage to hips and ridges was the most common type on new and old roofs, and lost ridge vents leave openings in the deck that let rain straight in. Gainesville has 22 thunderstorm-wind reports on NOAA's record for 2016 to 2025, so ridge caps and vents are worth checking after any strong gust, not only after named storms.

Can a handyman fix my roof in Gainesville?
Only a very small job. Florida exempts work of a casual, minor or inconsequential nature below a set contract amount from the contractor law, but not a larger job split into pieces, and not anyone who advertises as a contractor (Fla. Stat. 489.103(9)). Anything beyond that belongs to a roofing contractor under 489.105. Whether a small patch needs a permit is decided by the City of Gainesville Building Division for addresses inside the city.
