Gutters in The Crossings, FL

NOAA Atlas 14 puts a 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm in The Crossings at 10.8 inches an hour. Short bursts like that test a gutter hard. Knowing that number is the first step in deciding whether your current gutters are enough for this lot and this roof.

Sizing for local rain

How much rain your gutters need to handle

The plumbing code sizes gutters from the flow off the roof, and the design rate matters a great deal. NOAA Atlas 14 gives The Crossings a 1-hour, 10-year rain of 3.36 inches an hour, and a 24-hour, 10-year total of 8.35 inches. Short bursts are what overwhelm a gutter, so the 5-minute figure is the number to test your system against.

Miami International Airport averages 67.41 inches of rain a year, with 89.6 days at 0.10 inches or more. Most of that falls in the wet season. About 77 percent of the airport's normal annual rain comes from May through October. Gutters here carry a lot of water for many months, not just during storms.

About 51.6 percent of the housing units here are single-family detached homes, so many roofs drain to their own gutters and downspouts. With a median build year of 1981, many of these systems are likely original or well worn. That suggests checking hangers, seams and slope before the wet season.

  • Check that each run is 5 inch or 6 inch half-round, or a rectangular size the code table allows.
  • Confirm each downspout is at least 2 by 3 inches for the roof area it drains.
  • Add half the area of any wall that sheds water onto the roof when you size the system.

Discharge rules

Downspout placement and where the water goes

The Florida Building Code asks for a minimum distance between each downspout outlet and the house wall. Underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks can all work. On a Crossings lot, water left at the foundation can run toward the slab or into the yard, so check the outlet point after each heavy rain.

Keeping gutters clear

Leaves, trees and cleaning schedules

Southern live oaks in Florida drop leaves and litter the gutters, and UF/IFAS notes that fruit and leaves are a litter problem. Pine needles peak from September through November. Clean gutters before the June storm season starts, then again after the autumn needle drop, and sooner under heavy canopy.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 8.35 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at The Crossings).

10,404 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in The Crossings: questions

Are my gutters big enough for rain in The Crossings?

Compare your gutter size with the 5-minute, 10-year rate of 10.8 inches an hour from NOAA Atlas 14. Half-round 5 inch gutters carry 74 gallons per minute at 1/8 inch per foot slope, and 6 inch gutters carry 110. Downspouts must be sized to match. A roofer or your building office can check your current setup against the plumbing code tables.

How far from the house should a downspout discharge in The Crossings?

The Florida Building Code requires downspouts to discharge at least 1 foot from the structure sidewall. This can be done with underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks. Confirm the rule with the Miami-Dade building office before any change to an existing system.

How often should gutters be cleaned in The Crossings?

Experts quoted by Tower Hill Insurance Group recommend cleaning gutters at least twice a year, usually in spring and fall. In a typical year, Miami International Airport collects 67.41 inches of rainfall, and 76.6 percent of that total arrives between May and October. Clean before that wet season starts and again after the autumn pine needle peak, sooner under heavy oak or pine canopy.
