Gutters in Spring Hill, FL

Hurricane Debby left 8.34 inches of rain near Spring Hill in 2024, the highest total in Hernando County during that storm. For a gutter, though, the short burst matters more than the storm total: NOAA's Atlas 14 puts a 10-year, five-minute rate at Spring Hill's Census point at 9.84 inches an hour.

Local know-how

The same Atlas 14 point gives 11.3 inches an hour for a 25-year, five-minute burst and 13.4 for a 100-year one. Over a full day, a 10-year storm drops 7.07 inches there and a 100-year storm 12.9. Across a year, the Brooksville airport station, the closest normals in our data, averages 51.94 inches, almost half of it (25.44 inches) from June through August.

Code and upkeep

Code, permits and tree litter on Spring Hill gutters

Florida's residential code requires gutters and downspouts only where eaves project less than 6 inches, with exceptions for gable rakes and a roof above another roof. Wherever downspouts are installed, they must discharge at least 1 foot from the wall, by splash block, extension or underground pipe.

Hernando County's permit exemption list treats non-structural gutters as exempt, so a standard gutter job in Spring Hill needs no county permit; the same list names "Super Gutters" as requiring one. The gutters themselves must be metal or approved plastic with lapped, soldered or caulked joints and corrosion-resistant fasteners that suit the gutter material.

Trees decide how often they need clearing. A southern live oak's leaves and fruit are a recognized litter problem, and pine needles fall hardest from September through November. Tower Hill, a Florida insurer, recommends cleaning at least twice a year, spring and fall, and more often under overhanging branches.

Questions

Gutters in Spring Hill: questions

Do Spring Hill homes need gutters?

By code, only where the eaves stick out less than 6 inches, under section R318.5 of the Florida Residential Code; gable-end rakes and a roof over another roof are excepted. A house with deeper overhangs is not required to have them. Still, in a place that took 8.34 inches from Debby in 2024 and averages 74 days a year with a tenth of an inch of rain or more at the Brooksville airport, a gutter keeps that water off the walls and away from the foundation.

Should I get 5-inch or 6-inch gutters in Spring Hill?

Measure the roof area that drains into each run first. At Spring Hill's 10-year, five-minute rate of 9.84 inches an hour, our arithmetic on the plumbing code's table gives a 5-inch half-round gutter about 723 square feet of roof plan area and a 6-inch about 1,075, before any pitch factor. At equal slope, the 6-inch moves roughly 49 percent more water than the 5-inch. Steeper roofs count for more: at a 6-in-12 pitch, the sizing tables multiply plan area by 1.10.

Do I need a permit to install gutters in Spring Hill?

Not for ordinary gutters. Hernando County's residential permit exemption list exempts non-structural gutters, and Spring Hill follows the county's rules because it is not an incorporated city. The same list says "Super Gutters" require a permit, so check with the Hernando County Building Division if a quote names that kind of system. Downspouts still have to discharge at least 1 foot from the house.
