Gutters in Auburndale, FL

In a 10-year storm, rain in Auburndale can fall at 9.14 inches an hour for five minutes. That is the rate gutters have to handle during a short, hard burst. Most of the gutter failures we would expect here come from a system sized for ordinary rain, not for this kind of downpour.

Sizing the system

The method used to pick gutter and downspout dimensions for rainfall in Auburndale

Horizontal gutters are sized under plumbing code according to how much water the roof delivers to them. A 6-inch half-round gutter at 1/8 inch per foot slope is rated for about 110 gallons per minute. An older 5-inch size is rated for 74. Going up one size gives you about 49 percent more capacity at the same slope.

Downspouts are sized the same way. A 3 by 4 1/4 inch leader is rated for 192 gallons per minute, and a 2 by 2 inch leader only 30. Two small downspouts on a long run can fill faster than one size up. The 1-hour, 10-year rate here is 2.79 inches an hour, and the 24-hour, 10-year depth is 6.11 inches, so a wide roof can send a lot of water in a single run.

If your home has a wall that sheds rain onto the roof, code adds half that wall's area to the roof area. By our arithmetic, a 2,000 square foot roof with a 400 square foot wall above it counts as 2,200 square feet before you size the gutters.

Discharge rules

Where the downspout water must go

On most homes with eaves that stick out less than 6 inches, Florida code calls for gutters paired with downspouts. Every downspout has to let water out at a point no closer than 1 foot from the sidewall. Buried pipe, extended tails or splash blocks are all acceptable ways to satisfy that requirement.

Auburndale has 7,708 housing units and about 35 percent were built before 1980, so many homes here may still discharge water right at the foundation. Many houses here are likely older, so check the discharge point on your own lot before the next storm season.

  • Check that every downspout outlet sits a minimum of 1 foot away from the house wall.
  • Look for splash blocks that have sunk or washed away
  • Check that water does not pool against the foundation after rain

Debris and upkeep

Leaves, pine needles and cleaning schedule

Southern live oaks drop leaves and fruit that become a litter problem in gutters. Their trees can reach 60 to 80 feet tall. Pine needles peak in the autumn months from September through November, and they can collect in the same gutters.

A useful rhythm under oaks and pines is cleaning after the spring oak drop and pollen, which runs from January to June with peaks in March and April, then before the June to September storm season, and again after the autumn needle peak. Tower Hill Insurance Group advises clearing gutters no less than twice yearly, and sooner when trees hang over the roofline.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 6.11 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Auburndale).

7,613 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet ร— inches ร— 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Auburndale: questions

How hard does it rain in Auburndale?

A 10-year storm here drops rain at 9.14 inches an hour for five minutes, and 2.79 inches an hour for one hour. A 24-hour, 10-year storm brings 6.11 inches in total. Gutters and downspouts should be sized for that kind of burst, not for an average rain day. These numbers are drawn from NOAA Atlas 14 data specific to this town.

Do I need a downspout discharge at least 1 foot from my house?

Yes. Under Florida's residential code, each downspout must release water at least 1 foot out from the structure's sidewall. Underground piping, tail extensions and splash blocks can meet that rule. If you are unsure how your existing gutters are routed, confirm with the City of Auburndale Construction Services Office before you change them.

How often should gutters be cleaned around Auburndale oaks and pines?

Plan on cleaning them two times a year at minimum, and increase that frequency beneath dense tree cover. Live oaks drop litter, and pine needles peak from September through November. A practical schedule is after the spring oak drop, before the June to September storm season, and after the autumn needle peak. Many homes in Auburndale were built around 1990, so older gutters may also have worn seams that trap debris more easily, which makes a regular inspection worthwhile.
