Gutters in Eagle Lake, FL

A 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 9.24 inches an hour in Eagle Lake, according to NOAA Atlas 14. That rate, not the average rainy day, is what your gutters have to move. Water covers 48 percent of the city's area, so runoff from the surrounding lakes and low ground adds to the load on many lots.

Sizing for the storm

Sizing Eagle Lake gutters for a 9.24 inch burst

Gutter sizing starts from the heaviest short burst, not the yearly total. Here that burst is 9.24 inches an hour in a 10-year storm and 12.3 inches an hour in a 100-year storm. A 1-hour 10-year rain falls at 2.78 inches an hour. Ask your installer which of these numbers the sizing used.

The plumbing code sets gutter capacity in gallons per minute by size and slope. At 1/8 inch per foot, a 6-inch half-round gutter carries 110 gallons per minute and a 5-inch one carries 74. Going up one size adds about 49 percent of capacity at the same slope.

Sizing also depends on the design basis. The same 6-inch gutter serves far more roof area on the code's longer 1-hour basis than on the 5-minute burst used in older tables. The gap is more than 2x, so ask which basis was used for your roof.

Where the water exits

Downspout discharge rules for Eagle Lake homes

Florida's residential code requires gutters with downspouts where eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable end rakes or where a roof sits above another roof. Make sure each downspout empties at least a foot away from the wall of the building. The rule applies to new work here, and the City of Eagle Lake Building Department is the office to confirm how it applies to your permit.

Downspout capacity matters as much as gutter size. A 3-by-4-inch leader handles 192 gallons per minute, and a 2-by-2-inch leader only 30. A small leader can choke a large gutter in the same storm.

Keeping gutters clear

Keeping oak and pine debris out of Eagle Lake gutters

Southern live oaks are semi-evergreen and drop leaves and fruit that become a litter problem. Pollen season here runs January to June, peaking in March and April. Laurel oaks lead the pollen producers, followed by live oaks and cedars.

  • Plan this for the stretch from late April into May, once the oaks have shed their spring leaves and pollen has settled.
  • Ahead of the June to September storm season
  • Schedule it for roughly late November through December, when pine needles are falling most heavily.

The Tower Hill Insurance Group advises cleaning gutters at least twice a year and more often under overhanging trees. A blocked gutter may allow water to get in, which can encourage mold and undermine the foundation. Consumer Reports found that fine-mesh screens outperformed screens with larger holes, but none fully handled a severe downpour.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 6.09 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Eagle Lake).

7,588 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet ร— inches ร— 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Eagle Lake: questions

How hard does it rain in Eagle Lake?

A 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 9.24 inches an hour in Eagle Lake. A 100-year storm reaches 12.3 inches an hour. Over 24 hours, a 10-year storm drops 6.09 inches and a 100-year storm drops 10.6 inches. Gutters and downspouts should be sized to these short bursts, not the average day. Ask your installer which rainfall basis their sizing used.

What size gutter does Eagle Lake need?

The right size depends on roof area, slope and the storm basis used. A 6-inch half-round gutter at 1/8 inch per foot carries 110 gallons per minute, compared with 74 for a 5-inch gutter. Ask your installer to show the calculation for your roof. The City of Eagle Lake Building Department can confirm code requirements for your permit.

Where should downspouts drain on an Eagle Lake lot?

Make sure each downspout empties at least a foot away from the wall of the building. Underground piping, tail extensions and splash blocks all meet that distance. With water covering 48 percent of the city's area, check that runoff does not pool against the foundation. The Building Department can confirm local requirements.

How often should I clean gutters under oaks and pines in Eagle Lake?

The Tower Hill Insurance Group recommends cleaning gutters at least twice a year, and more often with overhanging trees. In Eagle Lake, where 39 percent of housing units were built before 1980, a practical schedule is after the spring oak leaf drop, before the June to September storm season, and after the autumn pine-needle peak. When gutters stay full of debris, water can build up and damage the foundation.
