Gutters in Lealman, FL

A 25-year storm in Lealman drops a 5-minute downpour at 11.4 inches an hour, and many homes here date to a 1968 median build year. Most standard gutters were not sized for that burst. Here is how the rain sizes your gutters and downspouts, and where the water should go.

Rain and sizing

How Lealman rainfall sizes gutters and downspouts

The 5-minute rate climbs from 10 inches an hour in a 10-year storm to 13.2 in a 100-year storm. Over a full hour, a 10-year storm here averages 2.83 inches an hour, and a 100-year storm 4.03. The short burst is what overflows a gutter, so size for the burst, not the hourly average.

The plumbing code gives each gutter size a flow capacity. A 5-inch half-round at 1/8 inch per foot slope carries 74 gpm. A 6-inch carries 110 gpm. By our arithmetic, the 6-inch moves about 49 percent more water, which matters on a long roof run with one downspout.

Downspouts have limits too. A 2 by 2 inch leader handles 30 gpm, while a 3 inch round handles 92 gpm. Roofs with a wall that sheds rain onto them need extra capacity added for that wall area.

Lot drainage

Older Lealman homes and where the water goes

The median Lealman home was built in 1968, 9 years older than the Pinellas County median of 1977. That suggests many gutters here are original or old replacements, with worn hangers and joints. Check the fastening, since the code calls for corrosion-resistant fasteners compatible with the gutter metal.

The code wants each downspout to empty a foot or more from the sidewall, through buried pipe, a tail extension or a splash block. Lealman has 10,591 housing units, and 47.3 percent are single-family detached, so most lots have room for an extension. Aim it away from the slab and from the neighbor's line.

Gutters with downspouts are required where eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable rakes or over another roof. Roof permits in unincorporated Lealman go through Pinellas County Building Services, so confirm any gutter or fascia change with that office.

Debris and upkeep

Leaves, trees and cleaning before storm season

Normal rainfall at St. Petersburg is 52.48 inches a year, and about 62 to 63 percent falls June through September. Clean gutters before June. A clog in July has nowhere to drain.

Live oaks are listed as a litter problem for their leaves. Pine needles come down heaviest between September and November, so Lealman yards with pines need a late-autumn check. Insurers suggest cleaning at least twice a year, more under overhanging trees, and fine-mesh screens still need brushing in pollen season.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 7.39 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Lealman).

9,208 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet ร— inches ร— 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Lealman: questions

How much rain should Lealman gutters handle?

Plan for the short burst. A 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 10 inches an hour here, and 13.2 in a 100-year storm. A 24-hour rain in a 10-year storm reaches 7.39 inches. Gutters sized only for average rain tend to overflow in the first minutes of a Lealman storm, so ask for sizing based on roof area and the burst rate.

How far must a downspout drain from my Lealman house?

The Florida Building Code sets the minimum at 1 foot from the sidewall, using buried piping, a tail extension or a splash block. This sits in a termite-protection section, so water against the wall is a pest issue as well as a drainage one. Confirm local details with Pinellas County Building Services.

Do older Lealman homes need new gutters when the roof is replaced?

Not automatically, but check them. The median home here dates to 1968, against 1977 for Pinellas County, so many gutters are likely old. Look for sagging, loose fasteners, failed joints and granules in the gutter, which can signal an aging roof. The code requires metal or plastic rated for outdoor use, securely fastened.

How often should I clean gutters near oaks and pines?

Plan on two cleanings a year at minimum, and add more if a canopy hangs over the roof. A sensible rhythm is after the spring oak drop, before June storms, and after the autumn pine-needle peak. About 62 to 63 percent of St. Petersburg's yearly rain falls June through September, so a clear gutter by June matters most.
