Gutters in Gulfport, FL

Gulfport sits on a peninsula, and about 28.5 percent of the city's total area is water. Rain that lands on a Gulfport roof has to leave through a gutter and a downspout sized for the short, intense burst, not the daily total. In a 25-year storm that burst runs 11.4 inches an hour. Pinellas County takes about 53 inches of rain a year, most of it from June through September.

Sizing for local rain

How much rain Gulfport gutters have to carry

The sizing number that matters is the short burst. Atlas 14 gives 10 inches an hour for five minutes in a 10-year storm, and 13.3 inches an hour in a 100-year storm. Over a full day, a 10-year storm drops 7.48 inches. Hurricane Hermine in 2016 put street and low-lying flooding worst in Pinellas County.

Gulfport lots often drain toward low ground near Boca Ciega Bay. A roof that sheds water faster than its gutter can carry it will push the overflow onto that same low ground.

Older gutter tables were built on rainfall records from before 1978, and they list lower rates for Tampa and Miami than current Atlas 14 values. A gutter sized from an old table can look adequate on paper and still fail in a modern burst. Confirm the size with the City of Gulfport building office before ordering.

Where the water goes

Downspout discharge and the one-foot rule

Florida's residential code requires gutters on any building whose eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable end rakes or where a roof sits above another roof. The downspout outlet has to land at least 1 foot from the sidewall. On a Gulfport lot with a small setback, that foot decides whether the water runs away from the foundation or back under it.

  • Run the discharge at least 1 foot from the wall by underground pipe, tail extension or splash block.
  • Check that the grade at the outlet falls away from the house, not toward it.
  • Match the leader to the roof plane it serves, using the plumbing code's gallons-per-minute table.

Each leader has a capacity. A 4-inch round carries 192 gpm and a 2-by-2-inch leader carries 30. A wall that sheds rain onto the roof counts toward the roof area the gutter must serve.

Keeping gutters clear

Oak leaves, pine straw and gutter cleaning

Southern live oaks are semi-evergreen and drop leaves and fruit as a litter problem. Pollen season runs January through June, with a peak in March and April, and oaks are among the major producers. Between September and November, the bulk of the pine needles come down. Clean gutters in spring and fall, and more often under heavy canopy, so they are clear before the June to September rain that brings about 62 to 63 percent of the year's total.

Fine-mesh guards kept more debris out in one consumer test, but none held up well in a severe downpour, and they still need brushing in high-pollen months. Plan on a ladder visit or a paid cleaning either way.

Questions

Gutters in Gulfport: questions

How hard does it rain in Gulfport?

A 10-year storm in Gulfport can drop rain at 10 inches an hour for five minutes, and a 100-year storm reaches 13.3 inches an hour. The 24-hour depth is 7.48 inches in a 10-year storm and 13.7 inches in a 100-year storm. Size gutters to the short burst. Confirm design values with the City of Gulfport building office.

Do gutters need to be on every Gulfport house?

Florida's residential code requires gutters with downspouts on buildings with eaves under 6 inches, except at gable end rakes or where a roof sits above another roof. Check your eave projection first. Permit questions go to the City of Gulfport Community Development office, which handles building permits here.

How far from the wall should a Gulfport downspout discharge?

At least 1 foot from the sidewall, by underground piping, a tail extension or a splash block. Make sure the grade at the outlet falls away from the foundation. Near Boca Ciega Bay, where about 28.5 percent of the city's area is water, water left standing beside the house can pool.

How often should I clean gutters under oaks in Gulfport?

Clean them at least twice a year, in spring and fall, and more often under heavy oak or pine canopy. Pinellas County gets about 62 to 63 percent of its roughly 53 inches of yearly rain from June through September, so clear gutters before June. Clogged gutters can cause water damage and mold.
