Gutters in Doral, FL
In a 10-year storm, Doral gets rain at 10.9 inches an hour over five minutes, and 15.5 in a 100-year storm. A gutter that handles an ordinary shower can overflow in that burst. Size the gutter and downspouts for the burst, then check where the water lands.

How Doral rainfall sets gutter and downspout size
Florida's plumbing code says horizontal gutters must be sized to the flow from the roof surface. Table 1106.6 lists a 5-inch half-round at 74 gallons a minute and a 6-inch at 110, both at 1/8 inch of slope per foot. By our arithmetic, that is about 49 percent more capacity for the 6-inch.

The design rain matters as much as the gutter. Older sizing tables rest on records through 1978 and list Miami at 7.7 inches an hour for the five-minute, 10-year burst. Doral's current figure is 10.9. If a gutter was sized from the old number, it may be undersized for the rain you actually get.
Downspouts set a second limit. Under Table 1106.3, a 4-inch round leader moves 192 gallons a minute, while a 2 by 2 inch one moves only 30. Code also tells you to add half the area of any tall wall that sheds rain onto the roof, which matters on two-story fronts.
Discharge rules
Doral downspout rules and where the water goes
The Florida Building Code requires gutters with downspouts on buildings whose eaves project less than 6 inches. Gable end rakes and roofs above another roof are excepted. Many of Doral's newer homes, built around a 2006 median, were likely built under this rule, and its newer-construction share is 39.5 percent against 11.4 percent countywide.
Where a downspout empties matters on a flat Doral lot. Code allows buried piping, tail extensions or splash blocks, so long as the water lands a foot or more from the sidewall. The rule sits in a termite-protection section, so it protects the slab as well as the wall. Only 22.2 percent of Doral's housing is single-family detached, so many roofs and downspouts belong to an association or a building manager.
Upkeep
Leaves, cleaning and what to ask your roofer
Miami Airport records show 76.6 percent of normal annual rain falling May through October, so clogs matter most before June. A Florida home insurer puts the minimum at two cleanings a year, with more under nearby trees or in frequent storms. Check after spring pollen and again after autumn needle and leaf fall.
Hangers matter in a hurricane zone. One hidden-hanger maker suggests 16-inch spacing in storm-prone areas instead of the standard 24 inches. Ask your roofer what spacing and fasteners they plan to use, and whether the building office needs a permit for the work. The City of Doral Building Department issues roof permits.

Questions
Gutters in Doral: questions
How big should gutters be in Doral?
Larger than the common 5-inch size if your roof is big. Doral's 10-year, five-minute rain falls at 10.9 inches an hour. Florida's plumbing table gives 74 gallons a minute for a 5-inch half-round gutter and 110 for a 6-inch, both at 1/8 inch of slope per foot. Add half the area of any wall that drains onto the roof. A roofer should show you the roof area and the gutter size they chose.

How far from my house must a downspout drain?
At least 1 foot from the sidewall. Florida Building Code R318.5 allows underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks to do this. Water that lands at the wall can reach the foundation and invite termites, which is why the rule sits in a termite-protection section. Confirm the details for your lot with the City of Doral Building Department.

Are gutters required on Doral houses?
On buildings with eaves projecting less than 6 inches, yes. The code excepts gable end rakes and roofs above another roof. With a median build year of 2006 in Doral, many homes likely went up under this rule. If your eaves are wider, gutters are not required, though they may still help move water away from the wall.

How often should I clean gutters in Doral?
Twice a year at minimum, before the wet season and after it. Miami records show 76.6 percent of annual rain between May and October, so a clean gutter in May matters. Clean more often under heavy tree cover. Never climb onto a roof or ladder when thunder can be heard, per NWS Miami guidance.
