Gutters in Cocoa, FL

In a 10-year storm, rain can fall at 10.2 inches an hour in just five minutes in Cocoa. Gutters that look fine on a dry day can overflow in that kind of burst. Sizing, downspout placement and cleaning all matter more here than most homeowners expect.

Sizing for local rain

Sizing gutters and downspouts for the rainfall you get in Cocoa

The plumbing code sizes gutters by roof area and slope, not by appearance. At a 1/8 inch per foot slope, a 6-inch half-round gutter moves 110 gallons a minute. The same slope lets a 5-inch gutter move 74 gallons a minute. That gap is roughly 49 percent, and it matters in a burst.

Downspouts follow their own table. A 2 by 3 inch leader carries 30 gallons a minute, and a 3 by 4 1/4 inch leader carries 192. A 2 by 2 inch downspout on a large roof will back water up into the gutter during a storm.

  • Measure the roof area that drains to each run, not the whole house.
  • Count half the surface area of any tall wall that drains onto the roof and include it in your totals.
  • Ask the installer which rainfall basis the sizing used.

Keeping water off the foundation

Downspout discharge and where Cocoa water goes

Florida code requires downspouts to discharge at least 1 foot from the building's sidewall, through underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks. Cocoa's 14.6 percent water share means many lots sit close to drainage paths, so a short downspout can send water toward the foundation.

Most Cocoa homes were built before the 2000s, and the median home dates to 1975. Older gutters may lack a proper discharge run. Check the downspout ends after the next heavy storm.

Clearing debris on schedule

Leaves, trees and cleaning frequency in Cocoa

Southern live oaks drop litter year round, and the trees can reach 60 to 80 feet tall. Pine needles peak in autumn. Under heavy canopy, clean gutters after the spring oak leaf drop and again after the autumn needle fall, and more often during June through September storm season.

When gutters back up, you may end up with water in the walls, mold, a damaged roof deck and shifting foundations. Inspect the gutters and downspouts during routine roof checks in spring and fall.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 7.46 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Cocoa).

9,295 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Questions

Gutters in Cocoa: questions

How much rain falls in a Cocoa storm?

In a 10-year storm, NOAA Atlas 14 puts the rainfall at 10.2 inches an hour over five minutes for Cocoa. A 1-hour 10-year storm falls at 3.05 inches an hour. A 24-hour 10-year storm brings 7.46 inches. Gutters and downspouts must carry that water away fast enough to avoid overflow.

How big should gutters be for a Cocoa home?

Gutter size depends on roof area and slope. A 6-inch half-round gutter at 1/8 inch per foot carries 110 gallons a minute, compared with 74 for a 5-inch gutter. Many homes in Cocoa were built around 1975, so older gutter systems may be undersized for today's heavy Florida downpours and are worth checking. Ask your installer which rainfall basis the sizing used, because the design basis can change the answer by more than twice.

How often should I clean gutters under oaks in Cocoa?

Clean them after the spring oak leaf drop and before June storm season, then again after the autumn pine needle peak. Under heavy canopy, clean them more often, since oak debris accumulates faster and can clog downspouts within weeks. Some insurers recommend cleaning at least twice a year. Many Cocoa homes were built around 1975, and their older gutter systems often sag or trap debris, so checking them after each cleaning is wise.
