Gutters in Frostproof, FL

A 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 9.04 inches an hour in Frostproof, according to NOAA's Atlas 14 rainfall tables. A gutter sized for a light summer shower can overflow in minutes under that load. The size, slope and downspout count of your gutters decide whether that water leaves your roof or runs down your walls.

Sizing for local rain

Sizing your gutters and downspouts for the rainfall Frostproof gets

Plumbing code sizes horizontal gutters from the water that lands on the roof. The table is based on rainfall intensity, slope and the roof area each gutter drains. Frostproof's Atlas 14 numbers are higher than the older table many gutter makers still print, so a size that worked on a 1978-era chart may now fall short.

Under the plumbing table, a 6-inch half-round gutter at 1/8 inch per foot slope carries 110 gallons per minute. At the same slope, a 5-inch gutter moves 74 of them. By our arithmetic, the 6-inch size moves about 49 percent more water, which matters on a long roof run along the 1983-era homes that make up much of Frostproof's housing stock.

Downspouts follow their own capacity table. A 2 1/2 by 3 inch leader handles 92 gallons per minute, and a 3 by 4 inch leader handles 192. Any wall that sheds rain onto the roof adds to that load, so a tall gable on a Frostproof home can double the water a single leader must carry.

Discharge and drainage

What happens to the water once it exits the gutter

Under Florida code, a downspout must empty at least 1 foot away from the wall. The discharge can run through underground pipe, a tail extension or a splash block. A downspout that dumps against a block foundation or a slab edge sends water where the house sits.

With 44 percent of Frostproof's total area under water, low ground and high water tables are common. Where the lot drains toward the house, extend the discharge further and grade the soil away from the wall. Confirm the requirements with the Polk County building office before you change the drainage path.

Keeping gutters clear

Leaves, trees and cleaning schedule

Southern live oaks drop litter year round and can reach 60 to 80 feet tall with a spread of 60 to 120 feet. Pine needles peak from September through November. Oak pollen season starts in January and peaks in March and April. Each of these fills a gutter at a different time of year.

Clean gutters at least twice a year, in spring and fall. Clean them more often under heavy canopy or during storm season. A clogged gutter can cause water damage, mold, roof damage and foundation issues, so the cost of skipping a cleaning is higher than the cost of doing one.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 6.11 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Frostproof).

7,613 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet ร— inches ร— 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Frostproof: questions

How much rain falls in a 10-year storm in Frostproof?

A 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 9.04 inches an hour in Frostproof, and a 100-year 5-minute burst reaches 12.1 inches an hour. In a 10-year storm, 24 hours of rain adds up to 6.11 inches. These figures come from NOAA's Atlas 14 tables for this town. Gutters sized to older charts may not handle these rates, so ask your installer which rainfall basis they used.

What size gutter does a Frostproof roof need?

The answer depends on the roof area each gutter drains, the slope and the rainfall rate used for sizing. In Frostproof, where a 5-minute 10-year downpour falls at 9.04 inches an hour, a 6-inch half-round gutter at 1/8 inch per foot slope carries 110 gallons per minute, while a 5-inch gutter carries 74. Your installer should size the run from your roof plan and the Atlas 14 rates for this town.

How far from the house should a downspout discharge?

Your downspout has to release water no closer than 1 foot to the sidewall, per Florida code. You can reach that distance with buried pipe, a tail extension, or a splash block. Frostproof's lots sit on 44 percent water area, so drainage can run toward the house on low ground. Confirm the details with the Polk County building office before you change the drainage path.
