Gutters in Seminole, FL
Pinellas County sits between the Gulf and Tampa Bay, and in Seminole a 5-minute burst in a 10-year storm can fall at 9.98 inches an hour. That rate fills an undersized gutter within minutes. Gutter size and downspout count matter here because of it.

Sizing for local rain
Sizing Seminole gutters for a 9.98 inch burst
Sizing starts from the short, hard burst, not the yearly total. In Seminole the 5-minute, 10-year rate is 9.98 inches an hour, and the 100-year rate is 13.2. A 1-hour 10-year storm adds 2.85 inches an hour. The short burst is what fills a gutter first, so sizing begins there.

Plumbing code sizes horizontal gutters by roof flow. At a 1/8 inch per foot pitch, a 6 inch half-round moves 110 gallons per minute, while a 5 inch handles 74. That is about 49 percent more capacity, which is why wider gutters often suit large Seminole roofs.
Pitch enlarges the roof area each gutter must serve. For roofs at 9 to 11 in 12 pitch, the design area is multiplied by 1.20, and at 12 in 12 by 1.30. Give your contractor the true pitch, because a steep roof sends more water into the same gutter.
Code and drainage
Downspouts, discharge, and where the water goes
Downspouts must be sized too. A 3 by 4 1/4 inch or 4 inch round downspout carries 192 gallons per minute under the plumbing table, while a 2 by 2 inch leader carries only 30. A 2 by 2 leader on a large Seminole roof will overflow at the first hard storm.
Where water lands matters. Seminole has a large share of owner-occupied single-family homes, and many of these lots drain toward the house if the discharge is short. Run the water away from the foundation, and confirm the layout with the City of Seminole building office.
Trees and upkeep
Debris from leaves, pollen and yard cleanup in Seminole
Southern live oaks in Central Florida drop leaves and fruit that clog gutters. Under oaks and pines, a sensible cleaning rhythm is after the spring oak drop and pollen in late April and May, before the June to September storm season, and after the autumn pine-needle peak in late November and December.
Gutter guards are not a full substitute for cleaning. Independent testing found that even the top-scoring screen was only middling at holding back a severe downpour, so expect to brush and check screens during high-pollen months.
Rain on your roof
Preset: 7.23 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Seminole).
9,009 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.
Math: square feet ร inches ร 0.623 gallons.
Questions
Gutters in Seminole: questions
How often should I clean gutters in Seminole?
Clean them at least twice a year, usually in spring and fall, and more often under heavy tree cover. Insurer guidance says clogged gutters can lead to water damage, mold, roof damage, pests and foundation issues. In Seminole, where tree cover over the roofs is heavy and gutters fill fast, schedule cleanings after the spring pollen and oak drop and again after the late-autumn needle fall, before the June to September storm season. Many of the homes here were built around 1979, so older gutter systems may need extra attention. Inspecting the roof in spring and fall can also catch granules collecting in gutters.

How far should a downspout drain from my house in Seminole?
Florida's residential code requires downspouts to discharge at least 1 foot away from the structure sidewall. Underground pipe, extended downspout tails or splash blocks can all accomplish that. The rule is part of the Florida Building Code, so confirm the layout on your lot with the City of Seminole building office before you install.

Do Seminole homes need gutters?
It can be, provided the eave overhang stays under 6 inches. The Florida Building Code requires gutters with downspouts on most buildings with eaves under 6 inches, except at gable end rakes or where one roof sits above another. Seminole's median home dates from 1979, so many older homes may lack them or have old, undersized ones.

What size gutter does a Seminole roof need?
Size depends on roof area, pitch and the local rain rate. A 6 inch half-round at 1/8 inch per foot slope carries 110 gallons per minute, compared with 74 for a 5 inch. Ask your contractor to size against the local 5-minute, 10-year rate of 9.98 inches an hour. Confirm the final design with your building office and your insurer.
