Gutters in Jupiter, FL
In a 10-year storm, rain falls on Jupiter at 10.3 inches an hour for five minutes, and a 100-year burst reaches 15. A gutter must carry that burst or it overflows at the fascia. Size it to the burst, not to an average rainy day.

How hard Jupiter rain sizes a gutter
The five-minute burst is what overflows a gutter. Across a full hour, a 10-year storm in Jupiter falls at 3.32 inches an hour. A 24-hour 10-year storm drops 9.35 inches. The short burst is roughly three times the hourly rate, and that is the number a gutter has to survive.

Florida's plumbing code sizes horizontal gutters to the flow from the roof surface. A half-round 5-inch gutter at a 1/8 inch per foot slope carries 74 gallons a minute. A 6-inch one carries 110, which is about 49 percent more by the code's own table. On a big roof facing the Atlantic, that jump is worth paying for.
Downspouts matter as much as the gutter. The same table rates a 3-inch round leader at 92 gallons a minute and a 4-inch round at 192. One undersized leader on a long run backs the whole gutter up. Roof area, pitch and wall runoff all add to the load, so the downspout count comes from the roof, not a rule of thumb.
Code rules
Downspout discharge and gutter rules in the code
A Jupiter house with eaves that stick out less than 6 inches must have gutters and downspouts under the residential building code. Gable end rakes and roofs above another roof are exempt. With Jupiter's median home built in 1989, plenty of houses here have short eaves that fall under this rule.
Each downspout must discharge at least 1 foot from the sidewall. You can meet that with underground piping, a tail extension or a splash block. The rule sits in a termite-protection section, so water pooling at the slab is the problem it targets.
The code also says gutters and leaders must be metal or approved plastic, with lapped, soldered or caulked joints, fastened with a corrosion-resistant device compatible with the gutter metal. Jupiter sits on the Atlantic coast at the Loxahatchee River mouth, so salt air makes that fastener detail matter.
Upkeep and drainage
Wet season, leaves and where the water ends up
At West Palm Beach Intl Airport, 67.3 percent of the year's rain falls May through October, and August is the wettest month at 8.68 inches. Clean gutters before May. Juno Beach, just south, averages 72.19 inches a year, so Jupiter's coastal side likely runs wetter than the airport figure suggests.
Florida insurer Tower Hill advises cleaning gutters at least twice a year, in spring and fall, and more often under overhanging trees. A live oak can spread 60 to 120 feet and drops leaves that clog gutters. Pine needles fall hardest from September through November, so a fall cleaning matters.
Lot type changes where water goes. Only 44 percent of Jupiter's housing units are single-family detached, and many of the rest are in attached buildings. On those, shared walls and low-slope sections can send roof water toward neighbors, so confirm the discharge path before you add or move a downspout.

Questions
Gutters in Jupiter: questions
What size gutters do I need in Jupiter, FL?
Most houses need a 5-inch or 6-inch half-round gutter, and larger roofs lean toward 6. Jupiter's 10-year, 5-minute rainfall rate is 10.3 inches an hour. The plumbing code rates a 5-inch half-round at 74 gallons a minute and a 6-inch at 110, at a 1/8 inch per foot slope. Roof area, pitch and any wall that sheds water onto the roof change the answer, so size it from the roof, not the house.

How far must a downspout discharge from the house?
At least 1 foot from the sidewall. Florida's residential code allows underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks to get there. The rule appears in a termite-protection section, so it aims at keeping water off the foundation. In Jupiter, where a 10-year, 24-hour storm drops 9.35 inches, that water has to go somewhere. The Town of Jupiter Building office reviews permits locally, so confirm any added drainage detail with them.

Are gutters required on a Jupiter house?
Gutters with downspouts are required when eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable end rakes or on a roof above another roof. Many Jupiter homes date from around 1989, the median build year, so short eaves are common. If your eaves are wider, the code does not require gutters, though they can still help control runoff.

How often should I clean gutters near Jupiter oaks and pines?
Plan on two cleanings a year at minimum, and add a third under a heavy tree canopy. Oak pollen and leaf litter peak in March and April, and pine needles fall most from September through November. A practical rhythm is late spring, before the June to September storm season, and again after the autumn needle peak. Palm Beach County's wet season brings most of its rain from May through October.
