Gutters in Cloud Lake, FL

A 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 11.3 inches an hour in Cloud Lake, according to NOAA's Atlas 14 values for this area. Gutters here need to be sized for short, intense rain, not only for the total rain a season brings.

Sizing for the storm

How much rain a gutter has to move in Cloud Lake

The plumbing code sizes horizontal gutters by the flow from the roof surface. For a half-round gutter, the diameter and slope set the capacity. A 6-inch half-round at 1/8 inch per foot carries about 110 gallons per minute, while a 5-inch carries about 74. Using the local numbers, that is about 49 percent more capacity for the larger size.

The design rainfall matters as much as the gutter size. At Cloud Lake's rates, a 6-inch half-round serves roughly 2,671 square feet of roof on the plumbing code's 100-year, 1-hour basis, but only about 1,107 square feet on the 5-minute, 10-year burst. The answer changes by more than twice depending on which basis you use. Ask your installer which one they sized to.

Older sizing tables were built on older rainfall records. One manufacturer's table says it rests on records through 1978. Treat any chart from that period as a starting point, not a final answer for a Cloud Lake roof.

Where the water goes

Downspout discharge and the code rule

Under the residential code, downspouts must discharge at least 1 foot from the building's sidewall. You can direct that water away with buried pipe, tail extensions, or splash blocks. Where Cloud Lake homes have a slab or a low lot edge, a downspout that dumps at the foundation can send water toward the footing.

Gutters with downspouts are required on buildings whose eaves project less than 6 inches, with exceptions for gable end rakes and for a roof above another roof. Many single-family homes in Cloud Lake are detached, so check the eave depth on your own house before assuming the rule applies or does not apply.

Keeping gutters clear

Leaves, trees and cleaning in Cloud Lake

Southern live oaks are semi-evergreen, and their fruit and leaves are a litter problem. Under a mature oak canopy, plan on more cleaning than a neighbor in the open. Pine needles build up most in autumn, from September through November.

A workable rhythm for Cloud Lake is to clean after the spring oak leaf drop and pollen, before the June through September storm season, and again after the autumn pine-needle peak. Heavy canopy means more often. One insurer advises cleaning at least twice a year, and more often with overhanging trees.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 9.23 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Cloud Lake).

11,501 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet ร— inches ร— 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Cloud Lake: questions

How big should my gutters be in Cloud Lake?

Size them to the 5-minute, 10-year rain of 11.3 inches an hour for this area, not to older charts. A 6-inch half-round at 1/8 inch per foot carries about 110 gallons per minute. Ask your installer which rainfall basis they used. A larger gutter costs more, but it moves more water in a burst.

Where should my downspouts send the water?

Under the residential code, downspouts must discharge at least 1 foot from the sidewall in Cloud Lake, as elsewhere in Palm Beach County. Use underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks. Keep the discharge away from the foundation so water does not sit against the footing.

Do I need gutters on my Cloud Lake home?

The code requires gutters with downspouts on buildings whose eaves project less than 6 inches, with exceptions for gable end rakes and roofs above other roofs. Measure your eave depth before deciding. With 61.75 inches of normal annual rain at West Palm Beach Airport nearby, gutters remain worth weighing even where eaves are deeper.

How often should I clean gutters near oak trees in Cloud Lake?

Clean them at least twice a year, in spring and fall, and more often under heavy canopy in Cloud Lake's 73.1 percent owner-occupied neighborhoods, where many homes sit under mature oaks. Southern live oaks drop litter, and pine needles peak from September through November.
