Gutters in Golden Beach, FL

A 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 11 inches an hour here, according to NOAA Atlas 14 values for Golden Beach. Gutters on this island have to move water that arrives in short, heavy bursts. Sizing them for average rain leaves the roof edge overflowing when it counts most.

Sizing for the burst

How much water your gutters must carry in a storm

For Golden Beach, the short-burst numbers matter most. At 11 inches an hour for a 5-minute 10-year storm, and 16.1 inches an hour in a 100-year storm, a narrow gutter can fill before the rain stops. Size the run to the burst the island actually gets.

The rainfall rate at Golden Beach also varies by design basis. Some older sizing tables were built on records through 1978 and list Miami at 7.7 inches an hour for the 5-minute burst. The newer local values are well above that, so an older table would undersize your gutters here.

The 24-hour 10-year depth is 8.88 inches. Downspouts have to carry that volume away as well as the peak rate. Ask your installer which basis they used to size the system.

Discharge rules

Downspout size and where the water must go

The code requires gutters with downspouts on most one- and two-family homes with eaves under 6 inches. Each downspout must end at least 1 foot out from the sidewall, carried by buried pipe, a tail extension or a splash block.

  • Downspout capacity: a 3 by 4 1/4 inch leader carries 192 gpm; a 2 by 2 inch leader only 30 gpm.
  • Count half the area of any vertical wall that sheds rain onto the roof.
  • Choose 6-inch half-round gutters over 5-inch where the roof is large, since 6-inch carries about 49 percent more.

Keeping gutters clear

Leaves, trees and cleaning schedule

Southern live oaks on a lot drop leaves and fruit that become a litter problem in gutters. Their canopy can reach 60 to 120 feet across, so a single tree can cover much of a roof. Miami-Dade County's wet season from May through October, when 76.6 percent of normal rain falls, is when that debris washes into the gutters.

Pollen peaks in March and April, and pine needles fall most from September through November. A reasonable rhythm is cleaning after the spring pollen and oak leaf drop, before the June to September rain season, and after the autumn needle peak. Clean more often under heavy canopy.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 8.88 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Golden Beach).

11,064 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet ร— inches ร— 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Golden Beach: questions

How big a rain do gutters on Golden Beach homes need to handle?

Design for the burst. NOAA Atlas 14 gives 11 inches an hour for a 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm at Golden Beach, and 16.1 inches an hour for a 100-year storm. A gutter sized for average rain will overflow in a short heavy burst. Ask your installer which rainfall basis was used for the sizing.

Where should my downspouts send the water on Golden Beach?

Florida's residential code requires downspouts to end at least 1 foot from the sidewall. On a Golden Beach lot, that means 11 inches an hour in a 10-year burst can pour off the roof in minutes. Buried pipe, a tail extension or a splash block all satisfy the rule. Check the discharge after each big rain.

Are gutters required on a home in Golden Beach?

The residential code requires gutters with downspouts on buildings with eaves under 6 inches, except at gable end rakes or on a roof above another roof. Golden Beach is 100 percent single-family detached, so most homes here fall under this rule. Check the eave depth on your own home.

How often should I clean gutters under trees in Golden Beach?

Clean them at least twice a year, in spring and fall, and more often under overhanging trees, according to one Florida insurer's guidance. In Miami-Dade County, 76.6 percent of normal rain falls from May through October, so cleaning before that season matters most. Southern live oaks and pines are the main debris sources on this island.
