Gutters in Manatee County, FL
A 10-year storm at Sarasota drops rain at 10.2 inches an hour over five minutes, and that burst is what your Manatee County gutters must handle. Bradenton roofs shed that water in seconds. Gutter width, downspout size and where the water lands all matter more here than in drier states.

Our workGutters in Manatee County, in short
Gutters here must carry 10.2 inches an hour in a short burst, and about 60 percent of the county's 49.05 inches of yearly rain falls June through September. The residential code sets a 1-foot minimum for downspout discharge at the sidewall. Many homes benefit from 6-inch gutters.
Rainfall load
How hard it rains and what that means
The airport station normal is 49.05 inches a year, and about 60 percent of it arrives June through September. That is a wet four months, not an even spread. Roughly 29 of those inches fall in the summer storm season, so your gutters work hardest when you are least likely to be up a ladder.
Tampa's older published rate was 8.3 inches an hour, from records through 1978. The Atlas 14 figure for Sarasota, 10.2, is higher. If a gutter was sized from an old chart, it may be undersized for what Manatee County storms deliver now. That is an inference, not a measurement of your roof.
Hurricane Hermine put more than 10 inches of rain on parts of Manatee County in 2016. Gutters are not built for totals like that, but a clean, large system keeps roof runoff from adding to the problem near your walls.
Sizing
Sizing gutters and downspouts for Bradenton roofs
The plumbing code lists a 5-inch half-round gutter at 74 gallons a minute and a 6-inch at 110, both at the same slope. A 6-inch carries about 49 percent more. For a large roof, that difference decides whether water stays in the trough or pours over the front.
Downspouts are sized separately. A 3-inch round leader is listed at 92 gallons a minute, and a 4-inch round at 192. One undersized downspout on a long gutter run backs the whole run up, so count the downspouts and check their size before you blame the gutter.
Steeper roofs shed faster, and the sizing method adds a pitch factor: 1.05 for a 4 to 5 in 12 pitch, up to 1.30 at 12 in 12. The design basis also matters. On one Florida example, a 6-inch gutter serves 2,671 square feet on a 1-hour, 100-year basis but only 1,107 on the 5-minute burst.
Florida code
Code rules for downspout discharge
Under the residential code, a Bradenton-area house with eaves projecting under 6 inches needs gutters and downspouts. Gable end rakes and a roof sitting above another roof are the exceptions. Where the code applies, each downspout has to empty 1 foot or more from the sidewall.
With the median Manatee County home built in 1991 and 53.5 percent of housing single-family detached, many lots here have short eaves and a slab close to the wall. Discharge point matters at those walls. The county Building Division handles unincorporated permits, so confirm local requirements there.
The code also requires gutters and leaders of metal or approved plastic, with lapped, soldered or caulked joints, fastened with corrosion-resistant hardware. That matters on Anna Maria Island and Holmes Beach, where salt air eats mismatched metals.
Debris and runoff
Leaves, trees and runoff on Manatee lots
Southern live oak is listed as a litter problem, growing 60 to 80 feet tall with a spread of 60 to 120 feet. Pine needles drop heaviest in autumn, September into November. Under that kind of canopy, a sensible rhythm is cleaning after the spring oak drop, before June, and after the autumn pine peak.
Runoff behavior depends on your lot. Bradenton Beach lies entirely in a flood zone, and Hurricane Ian in 2022 pushed river crests to record levels in the county. Gutters cannot stop flooding, but they should send roof water away from the wall rather than into already wet ground.
Mobile homes are 13.7 percent of Manatee County housing, and many have low eaves. Check that each downspout actually reaches a splash block or pipe, because a broken extension sends the whole roof's runoff against the skirting.

Questions
Gutters in Manatee County: questions
What size gutters do I need in Manatee County?
Many homes here do well with 6-inch half-round gutters. The plumbing code lists a 5-inch at 74 gallons a minute and a 6-inch at 110. Sarasota's 10-year, 5-minute rainfall rate is 10.2 inches an hour, so a larger trough gives more margin on a big roof. Final size depends on your roof area and pitch, so have it worked out for your house.

How far must a downspout discharge from my house?
At least 1 foot from the sidewall. The code lists underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks as ways to do it. This sits in a termite-protection section, so it is about keeping soil near the foundation dry. Confirm any added local requirement with Manatee County Development Services, Building Division.

Does my Manatee County house have to have gutters?
Only if the eaves project less than 6 inches, with exceptions for gable end rakes and a roof above another roof. Homes with wider eaves are not covered by that rule. With a median build year of 1991 here, check your eave depth rather than assuming.

How often should I clean gutters in Bradenton?
At least twice a year, spring and fall, and more under overhanging trees. About 60 percent of the 49.05 inches of yearly rain falls June through September, so clean before June. Live oak litter and autumn pine needles are the usual culprits.

Do gutter guards work in Manatee County?
Partly. Consumer Reports found fine-mesh screens outperformed larger-hole screens, but even the top-scoring screen was only middling in a severe downpour, and inserts did poorly. High-pollen areas may still need brushing. With 10.2 inches an hour possible in a burst, no guard replaces correct sizing.

What hangers hold up near the Gulf coast?
One hidden-hanger maker recommends clips and aluminum for coastal and storm-prone areas, with 16-inch spacing instead of the standard 24. That is a manufacturer suggestion, not a code rule. The code does require corrosion-resistant fasteners, which matters in Holmes Beach and Anna Maria, on the barrier islands of Manatee County.
