Gutters in South Bradenton, FL
In a 100-year storm, the heaviest five minutes at South Bradenton's Census point rain at 13.5 inches an hour, by NOAA's Atlas 14. Gutters in South Bradenton meet that on houses whose median build year is 1975, so the fascia behind the gutter matters as much as the gutter.

Local know-how
Fascia, hangers and older eaves
With 68% of South Bradenton's housing built before 1980, many gutters here hang on fascia boards that have taken decades of rain. A gutter is only as strong as the board it is screwed to. Florida's rules put fascia work inside a roofing contractor's scope during a roof repair or replacement, and the specialty structure contractor rule lists soffit, fascia and gutters together.
The residential code wants gutters of metal or approved plastic, with lapped, soldered or caulked joints, fastened with corrosion-resistant hardware compatible with the gutter metal. One hidden-hanger maker spaces hangers 24 inches apart as standard and recommends 16 inches with clips in coastal and storm-prone areas.

Sizing
How much roof one downspout drains
Downspouts carry their own ratings in the plumbing code: 92 gallons a minute for a 3-inch round leader and 192 for a 4-inch. By a gutter maker's conversion table, each gallon a minute equals 96.15 square feet of roof under 1 inch an hour of rain. At South Bradenton's 10-year, 5-minute rate of 10.1 inches an hour, one 3-inch round downspout drains about 880 square feet of roof plan area, and a 4-inch about 1,830. Both figures are our own arithmetic, not a code requirement.
Downspouts must then discharge at least 1 foot from the wall, by pipe, extension or splash block. Where 15,013 housing units share 4.6 square miles, point the water where it will not run toward a neighbor's foundation.
Rain on your roof
Preset: 6.98 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at South Bradenton).
8,697 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.
Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.
Upkeep
When the rain comes
Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport averages 49.05 inches of rain a year, about 60% of it from June through September. Clean gutters before June, after the spring pollen season that peaks in March and April, and again after the fall needle drop, heaviest from September through November.
Questions
Gutters in South Bradenton: questions
Why don't most Florida homes have gutters?
Florida's residential code requires gutters and downspouts only where the eaves project less than 6 inches, apart from gable-end rakes and roofs above other roofs, so many homes with deeper overhangs were built without them. That does not make the rain lighter. Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport averages 49.05 inches a year, and an eave without a gutter drops all of it beside the foundation, where the code wants downspouts to discharge at least 1 foot out.

When should old gutters on a South Bradenton house be replaced?
Look at the hangers, joints and fascia before the age. The code asks for lapped, soldered or caulked joints and corrosion-resistant fasteners that match the gutter metal, so rusted fasteners, open seams and sagging runs are the signs of a system near its end. On South Bradenton houses, 94% of them built before 2000, the fascia behind an old gutter can be the bigger problem, and it should be sound before anything new is hung.

How much rain can a single storm drop on South Bradenton?
More than a gutter holds at once, which is why downspouts matter. Hurricane Hermine dropped more than 10 inches of rain at sites in Manatee County in 2016. NOAA's Atlas 14 puts the 10-year, 24-hour rain at South Bradenton's Census point at 6.98 inches and the 100-year at 12.3. The rain calculator on this page starts from the 6.98-inch figure to show how many gallons a roof sheds.
