Gutters in Town 'n' Country, FL

Town 'n' Country sits in Hillsborough County, where a 10-year, five-minute downpour falls at 9.74 inches an hour. That is a lot of water in a short time for a gutter to carry. Many of the 35,649 housing units here were built around 1984, so many original gutters and downspouts are likely decades old and sized for an older rain table. Sizing, downspout placement and cleaning all matter on a lot here.

Sizing for local rain

How rain here sets the size of your gutters

Gutter size depends on the rain rate you design for, not just the roof area. The local five-minute, 10-year rate is 9.74 inches an hour, and the 25-year rate is 11.1. A 100-year five-minute burst reaches 12.9. The older gutter tables many contractors still quote were built on records through 1978, which gave Tampa a lower five-minute intensity of 8.3 inches an hour.

The plumbing code sizes horizontal gutters by roof flow, with a 6-inch half-round carrying about 110 gallons a minute at a 1/8-inch-per-foot slope. By our arithmetic, that same 6-inch gutter at 1/8 slope serves roughly 1,107 square feet on the five-minute, 10-year burst, but about 2,671 square feet on the 100-year, one-hour basis. The design rate you choose changes the answer by more than twice.

  • Measure the roof plan area that drains to each run, and add the wall area that sheds rain onto the roof.
  • Check the pitch factor. A roof at 9 to 11 inches per foot needs a factor of 1.20 on the design area.
  • Upsize where a roof valley or long run collects flow from two planes.

Code and lot drainage

Downspouts, discharge and where the water goes

Florida residential code requires gutters with downspouts on buildings whose eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable end rakes or where a roof sits above another roof. Downspouts must discharge at least 1 foot from the sidewall, through underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks. On a lot in Town 'n' Country, that clearance keeps water off your foundation during the June to September rainy months, which supply about 61 percent of the annual 49.48 inches at Tampa International Airport.

Downspout capacity matters too. A 3-by-4-inch or 4-inch round leader carries about 192 gallons a minute, while a 2-by-2-inch leader carries only 30. Pick the leader size to match the gutter it feeds, and use metal or approved plastic joined and fastened to the code standard.

Keeping gutters clear

Leaves, pollen and cleaning on oak and pine lots

Southern live oaks in Central Florida drop leaves that are a litter problem for gutters, and oaks, pines and melaleucas drive the pollen season, which runs January to June and peaks in March and April. Pines drop needles most heavily from September through November. Under heavy canopy, a sensible cleaning rhythm is after the spring oak drop, before the June to September storm season, and after the autumn needle peak.

Consumer Reports found that fine-mesh gutter screens held up better than larger-hole screens, but even the top screen struggled with a severe downpour. Screens do not remove the need to clean. Tower Hill Insurance Group advises cleaning gutters at least twice a year and more often with overhanging trees, since clogged gutters can cause water damage, mold and foundation issues.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 6.46 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Town 'n' Country).

8,049 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet × inches × 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Town 'n' Country: questions

How big should gutters be for a home in Town 'n' Country?

Size them on the local rain rate, not an old table. Town 'n' Country's 10-year, five-minute rate is 9.74 inches an hour, and the 100-year rate is 12.9. A 6-inch half-round at 1/8-inch-per-foot slope carries about 110 gallons a minute. A contractor or your building office can match gutter and downspout size to your roof area and pitch.

Do I need gutters on a home in Hillsborough County?

Florida residential code requires gutters with downspouts where eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable end rakes or where one roof sits above another. Check your own eave depth and ask the county building office, which issues permits for unincorporated Hillsborough County. Hillsborough County Building Permits and Records is the place to confirm what applies to your property.

How far from the house should downspouts discharge?

Florida code requires downspouts to discharge at least 1 foot from the structure sidewall, using underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks. This keeps water away from the foundation during the June to September rainy season, which brings about 61 percent of Tampa's 49.48 inches of yearly rain.

How often should I clean gutters with oak trees nearby?

Clean after the spring oak leaf drop and pollen season in late April to May, before the June to September storms, and after the pine needle peak from September to November. In Town 'n' Country, with its 49.48 inches of yearly rain at Tampa International Airport, Tower Hill Insurance Group advises at least twice a year, and more often under overhanging trees.
