Gutters ยท Lake Magdalene

Gutters in Lake Magdalene, FL

A 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 9.85 inches an hour in Lake Magdalene. That is far harder than most gutters are sized for, so the size and slope you choose matter more here than in drier towns. Gutter size, downspout rules and debris cleaning all follow from that single burst of water.

Sizing for local rain

How heavy rain here sets the size of your gutters

Gutter size follows the storm you expect, not the average rain. Here the short, intense burst is the number that counts. The 1-hour, 10-year rain falls at 2.92 inches an hour, and the 24-hour, 10-year total is 6.75 inches. Those figures suggest that a gutter sized only for a light steady rain will overflow during the storms most likely to reach your roof.

The plumbing code sizes horizontal gutters from the flow off the roof, and a 6-inch half-round at 1/8 inch per foot carries 110 gpm, about 49 percent more than a 5-inch at the same slope. That step up is the cheapest margin you can buy against a local burst. Ask the installer which design rain they used.

Roof pitch adds to the load. A steeper roof sheds more water into the same gutter, so a pitch of 6 to 8 in 12 uses a factor of 1.10 on the plan area. On a Lake Magdalene lot where a sloped wall drains onto the roof, installers should count that wall too, since its water lands in the same gutter.

Downspouts and discharge

Downspouts, discharge and the code rule near your foundation

Buildings with eaves that stick out less than 6 inches need gutters and downspouts under Florida code, though gable end rakes and roofs that sit above another roof are exempt. Under the code, downspout water has to travel at least 1 foot away from the sidewall, which you can accomplish with buried pipe, tail extensions, or splash blocks. On a lot near one of the 11 named lakes, that clearance keeps water away from the footing.

A 3 by 4 1/4 inch leader carries 192 gpm and a 2 by 2 inch leader only 30 gpm. Match the leader to the gutter, since a small downspout will choke the flow even when the gutter is correctly sized. Use metal or approved plastic with lapped or sealed joints, fastened with corrosion resistant hardware.

Debris and cleaning

Leaves, pine needles and cleaning on this lot type

Live oaks and pines drop debris heavily here. Pollen peaks in March and April, oak litter follows, and pine needles fall most from September through November. Under heavy canopy, a practical schedule is after the spring oak drop, before the June through September storm season, and after the autumn needle peak. Clean more often if you have overhanging trees.

Clogged gutters can cause water damage, mold, roof damage and foundation problems. Consumer Reports found that fine-mesh screens outperform larger holes, though none fully contained a severe downpour, so screens reduce cleaning but do not replace it. Inspect the gutters for granules, which can signal a roof past its prime.

Questions

Gutters in Lake Magdalene: questions

How hard does rain fall in Lake Magdalene, and what does that mean for my gutters?

A 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 9.85 inches an hour here, and a 100-year storm reaches 13 inches an hour. Gutters sized for a light, steady rain can overflow in these bursts. Ask your installer which design rain they used. A larger 6-inch half-round at 1/8 inch per foot carries 110 gpm, about 49 percent more than a 5-inch at the same slope.

How far from my house should a downspout discharge in Florida?

The state code sets a minimum of 1 foot between the sidewall and where each downspout lets water out. You can achieve this with underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks. Keep the water away from the footing, especially on a lot close to Lake Magdalene, which covers part of the 1.41 square miles of water in this place.

Are gutters required on every house in Florida?

If your eaves project less than 6 inches, you will need gutters with downspouts, except where the roof meets a gable end rake or sits on top of a lower roof. In Lake Magdalene, where 72.3 percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, many owners will check their own eaves first. Your Hillsborough County building office can confirm how the rule applies to an older house built around 1982.

How often should I clean gutters under oaks and pines here?

Plan to clear them out no less than twice yearly, and increase that frequency if your property has dense tree cover overhead. In Lake Magdalene, pine needles fall most from September through November, and live oak litter follows the spring pollen peak in March and April. Many homes here were built around 1982, so older gutters may sag or trap debris more easily and deserve a closer look during each cleaning. Tower Hill Insurance Group recommends the same spring and fall cleaning.
