Sizing starts with the roof. SMACNA-style tables convert rain to flow at 96.15 square feet of roof per gallon a minute for each inch an hour, and they enlarge the design area for steeper roofs: by 5% at 4 to 5 in 12, 10% at 6 to 8 in 12, and up to 30% at 12 in 12. A two-story house with a steep main roof needs more gutter than its footprint suggests.

What should new gutters on a Newberry house be made of?

The residential code allows metal or approved plastic rated for outdoor exposure, with lapped, soldered or caulked joints, fastened with corrosion-resistant hardware of a material compatible with the gutter (FBC-Residential R903.4.2). Match the fasteners to the gutter metal so they do not corrode each other. With June-to-August rain at the county's climate station averaging 20.64 inches, joints that drip will show it within one summer.

One hidden-hanger maker lists 24-inch spacing as standard but recommends 16 inches with clips in storm-prone areas, and the fascia must be sound enough to hold the screws; roofing contractors may replace fascia as needed during roof work.
