Gutters in Palm City, FL
In a 10-year storm, rain in Palm City falls at 10.2 inches an hour for five minutes, and a 100-year burst reaches 14.9. Gutters sized for lighter rain overflow fast. Martin County's 62.72 inches a year at Stuart is mostly May through October, so the load arrives when storms do.

Our workRainfall and sizing
How hard it rains and what that does to gutter size
The five-minute burst matters most, because gutters overflow in short peaks, not over a full day. The one-hour rate in a 10-year storm is 3.08 inches an hour. The five-minute rate is about 3.3 times that. Size for the burst, not the hourly average.

The plumbing code sizes gutters by flow from the roof surface. A half-round 6 inch gutter at 1/8 inch per foot slope carries 110 gpm, against 74 gpm for a 5 inch. That suggests a 6 inch gutter is the safer choice on a larger roof plane here. Downspouts follow their own table: a 3 inch round carries 92 gpm, a 4 inch round 192.
Added wall area counts too. The code says to add half the area of any vertical wall that sheds rain onto the roof, which matters at a two-story section meeting a lower roof.
Code rules
Downspout discharge, fastening and what Florida code requires
With 74 percent of Palm City housing units single-family detached, the residential code section on gutters reaches most homes here. Section R318.5 sets a trigger: eaves that project under 6 inches need gutters and downspouts. Two situations fall outside it, a gable end rake and a roof sitting above another roof.
The same section sets where the water lands. A downspout has to end a foot or more out from the wall, through underground piping, a tail extension or a splash block. The rule lives in a termite-protection section, so water left at the wall invites pests as well as moisture.
Joints on a house gutter must be lapped, soldered or caulked, and fasteners must be corrosion resistant and compatible with the metal. Salt air from the river and coast makes that detail worth checking on any quote. A hanger maker advises 16 inch spacing in storm-prone areas.
Debris and drainage
Leaves, trees and where the water goes
Southern live oak drops leaves and fruit and spreads 60 to 120 feet, so one tree can cover a whole roof. Pollen season runs January to June and oak leaf drop follows. Pine needle fall peaks in autumn, September through November, per UF/IFAS.
A sensible rhythm under oaks and pines is a cleaning after the late April and May leaf drop, another before June storms, and a third after the autumn needle peak. Fine-mesh screens did better than coarse ones in independent testing, but still need brushing.
Water covers 15.4 percent of Palm City's area, and the South Fork of the St. Lucie River borders it. On low lots near that water, a downspout that ends one foot from the wall may still pool. Check where the splash block drains after a heavy rain, and confirm any permit question with the Martin County Building Department.

Questions
Gutters in Palm City: questions
How big should gutters be in Palm City?
A 6 inch half-round gutter is the safer pick for most roofs here. In a 10-year storm, rain falls at 10.2 inches an hour for five minutes. At 1/8 inch per foot slope, a 6 inch half-round carries 110 gpm and a 5 inch carries 74. Downspouts matter as much: a 3 inch round carries 92 gpm and a 4 inch round carries 192. Roof size and slope change the answer, so size from your plan area.

Are gutters required on a Florida house?
Often yes. The residential building code calls for gutters and downspouts when eaves project less than 6 inches, with carve-outs for gable end rakes and for a roof that sits above another roof. Downspouts must end 1 foot or more from the sidewall. Palm City is unincorporated, so the Martin County Building Department is the office to confirm how this applies to your home.

How often should I clean gutters in Palm City?
Plan on at least twice a year, and more under trees. One Florida insurer advises spring and fall cleaning, and more often with overhanging trees. In Martin County, 67.6 percent of the year's rain falls May through October, so clear gutters before June. Oak leaf drop and pollen run into May, and pine needles peak September through November.

Do gutter screens stop all clogging?
Not fully. In Consumer Reports testing, a finer mesh outperformed larger holes, yet the strongest screen only contained a severe downpour so-so. Inserts did poorly. In high-pollen areas a screen may need brushing, which still means a ladder. With 92.0 days a year of 0.10 inch or more at Stuart, debris rinses in often.
