Gutters in Satellite Beach, FL

In a 10-year storm, rain at Satellite Beach can fall at 10.5 inches an hour over five minutes, according to NOAA Atlas 14 values for this town. A 100-year burst reaches 14.9 inches an hour. Gutters and downspouts here must move a lot of water in a short time, so sizing them for real rainfall matters more than picking a style.

Rain and sizing

How much water a Satellite Beach roof must shed

A 1-hour rain in a 10-year storm falls at 3.04 inches an hour here, and the 24-hour total reaches 7.42 inches in that same storm. Those figures show that a gutter has to handle a brief, intense burst as well as a long soaking. Many homes on the island were built around 1975, so older gutters may have been sized for lighter rain than this town now sees.

Horizontal gutter sizing follows the water the roof surface sends into it. Per the plumbing code, a 6-inch half-round gutter pitched at 1/8 inch per foot moves 110 gallons per minute, while a 5-inch model moves 74. Our math suggests the larger size, at that same slope, gives roughly 49 percent more capacity. Downspouts are sized the same way, so a 2 1/2 by 3 inch leader at 92 gallons per minute will not match a wider run that drains a large roof plane.

The sizing answer depends on which rain figure the designer uses. At Atlas 14 values for this town, a 6-inch half-round at 1/8 inch per foot serves about 2,671 square feet on the plumbing code's 100-year, 1-hour basis. On the 5-minute, 10-year burst it serves only about 1,107 square feet. That gap is arithmetic on sourced numbers, not a code requirement, so ask your installer which basis they used.

Code and drainage

Where downspouts must empty and how far the water should travel

Under Florida's residential code, gutters and downspouts are needed on any building whose eaves stick out less than 6 inches, unless the spot is a gable end rake or a roof sitting above another roof. Downspouts must discharge at least 1 foot away from the building's sidewall, by underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks. On a lot here, water dumped against the foundation can work toward the slab or pier, so confirm the discharge point before you accept a finished job.

Hurricane Matthew in 2016 recorded an 87 mph gust at Satellite Beach, and its damage in the county involved roof shingles, soffits and awnings. Loose or failed gutters are often the first thing a storm takes, so check fasteners after any wind event. Gutters must be securely fastened with corrosion resistant hardware of a compatible metal, and joints must be lapped, soldered or caulked.

Debris and upkeep

Managing debris from leaves, pollen and cleaning on lots shaded by trees

Southern live oaks are semi-evergreen and drop a litter of leaves and fruit, and they can reach 60 to 80 feet tall. Oaks and pines are major pollen producers here, with pollen season running January to June and peaking in March and April. On Satellite Beach lots, the pine needle drop arrives in autumn, so the gutters you cleaned in spring will fill again by late fall. Clogged gutters from these sources can cause water damage, mold, roof damage and foundation issues.

A sensible cleaning rhythm under heavy oak or pine cover is after the spring oak drop and pollen in late April and May, before the June to September storm season, and after the autumn needle peak in late November and December. Clean more often when the canopy is dense. Gutter screens have limits, since one test found even the top screen only middling at handling a severe downpour.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 7.42 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Satellite Beach).

9,245 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Questions

Gutters in Satellite Beach: questions

How much rain should my gutters handle in Satellite Beach?

Plan for a short burst as well as a long soak. NOAA Atlas 14 values for this town show a 5-minute, 10-year rain falling at 10.5 inches an hour, and a 1-hour, 10-year rain at 3.04 inches an hour. A 24-hour, 10-year storm totals 7.42 inches. Ask your installer which rain basis their gutter size is built on, since the answer can differ more than twofold.

Where should my downspouts send the water?

Florida's residential code asks that each downspout release water no closer than 1 foot to the building's side wall. The water can go through underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks. A downspout that dumps water right at the foundation does not meet that rule. Many homes in this area were built around 1975, when rain gutters were often installed without extensions, so older systems are worth checking first. Walk the outside during heavy rain and check each discharge point.

Do homes in Satellite Beach need gutters at all?

On structures with eaves under 6 inches, the code calls for gutters and downspouts, excluding gable end rakes and roofs that rise above another roof. Many island homes built around 1975 may have older gutters sized for lighter rain. If your eaves are wide, confirm with the City of Satellite Beach Community Development Department what applies to your home.

How often should I clean gutters under oak and pine trees here?

Many specialists advise clearing gutters a minimum of twice yearly, typically during spring and autumn, and on a more frequent schedule where trees hang over the roof. Under oaks and pines on Satellite Beach lots, clean after the spring pollen and oak drop in late April and May, before the June to September storm season, and after the pine-needle peak in late November and December. Hurricane Matthew's 87 mph gust here is a reminder to check fasteners after storms too.
