Gutters in Martin County, FL
At West Palm Beach, NOAA Atlas 14 puts the 5-minute rainfall rate in a 10-year storm at 11.3 inches an hour, and Martin County sits just up the coast. A standard 5-inch gutter can be overwhelmed by a burst like that. Size gutters and downspouts for the heaviest few minutes, not the average day.

Our workGutters in Martin County, in short
Rainfall in Stuart comes to about 62.72 inches annually, and roughly 67.6 percent of that lands between May and October. Gutters here should be sized for short, hard bursts. Florida code requires downspouts to discharge at least 1 foot from the sidewall on homes with eaves under 6 inches.

Local rainfall
How hard it rains in Stuart and Martin County
Stuart's 1991-2020 normal is 62.72 inches a year, with 92.0 days of 0.10 inch or more. That is roughly one rainy day in four. Gutters on a Martin County house work most of the year, not only in storms.
The wet season does most of the work. At Stuart, 67.6 percent of annual rain (42.41 inches) falls May through October, and August is the wettest month at 8.49 inches. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, so the heaviest rain and the strongest wind arrive together.
Older sizing tables can mislead you. One manufacturer's table says it rests on records through 1978 and lists Miami at 7.7 inches an hour. NOAA Atlas 14 shows 11.3 at West Palm Beach. A gutter chosen from the old chart may be too small for today's bursts.
Capacity
Sizing gutters and downspouts for a 10-year burst
Florida's plumbing code sizes gutters by flow, in gallons per minute. A half-round 5-inch gutter at 1/8 inch per foot slope carries 74 gpm. A 6-inch carries 110 gpm. That is about 49 percent more capacity from one size up.
Downspouts are the next limit. A 3-inch round leader handles 92 gpm, and a 4-inch round handles 192 gpm. A long roof run feeding one small downspout backs up even when the gutter itself is large enough.
Roof pitch and walls add water. A steep 12-in-12 roof counts 1.30 times its plan area, and the code adds half the area of any wall that drains onto the roof. Ask your installer to show the numbers, not just a size.
The rainfall basis matters too. On one Florida example, the same 6-inch gutter serves over twice the roof area on the 1-hour basis as on the 5-minute burst. Insist the contractor says which basis was used.
Discharge rules
Where downspout water should go on Martin County lots
Florida's residential code requires downspouts to discharge at least 1 foot from the sidewall, by underground pipe, tail extension or splash block. The rule sits in a termite-protection section, so it protects the foundation as well as the yard.
The same code requires gutters with downspouts on buildings whose eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable rakes or on a roof above another roof. Many single-family homes here, 54.2 percent of housing units, are detached houses with modest eaves.
Water is close to everyone here. Martin County is 27.8 percent water by area, and Hurricane Ian rain flooded roadways in parts of the county. Point discharge toward the street or a swale, away from a neighbor's wall, and confirm drainage with the Martin County Building Department.
Maintenance
Leaves, hangers and keeping gutters clear
Southern live oaks grow 60 to 80 feet tall with a spread of up to 120 feet, and their leaves are a known litter problem. A single oak can reach over a roof from the neighboring lot. Oaks and pines also drive Florida's pollen season, which peaks in March and April.
Needle drop on pine trees peaks in the stretch from September into November. A workable rhythm is cleaning after the spring oak drop, before June, and after the autumn needle peak. Do it more often under heavy canopy. NRCA says to inspect in fall and spring and clear gutters of dead leaves.
Hangers matter after storms. A hidden-hanger maker suggests 16-inch spacing and aluminum in coastal, storm-prone areas, against 24 inches standard. Nicole brought a 54-knot sustained wind at the House of Refuge in Martin County, and Isaias reached 42 knots at Stuart Beach.
Code requires metal or approved plastic gutters with lapped, soldered or caulked joints, fastened with corrosion-resistant fasteners. Granules collecting in gutters can also signal an aging shingle roof. About a third of homes here, 33.5 percent, predate 1980.

Questions
Gutters in Martin County: questions
What size gutters do I need in Martin County?
Most houses need 6-inch gutters with 3-inch or 4-inch downspouts, but the roof decides. NOAA Atlas 14 shows 11.3 inches an hour for a 5-minute, 10-year storm at West Palm Beach, nearby. A 6-inch half-round carries 110 gpm against 74 gpm for a 5-inch. Large or steep roofs may need more, so ask for the flow calculation.

How far from my house must a downspout drain?
At least 1 foot from the sidewall. Florida's residential code allows underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks. The rule applies to Stuart, Palm City, Hobe Sound and every other Martin County address. Longer runs toward a swale keep water off the foundation, especially since Stuart averages 62.72 inches of rain a year.

Does Florida require gutters on my house?
Only in certain cases. The code requires gutters with downspouts where eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable rakes or on a roof above another roof. With 54.2 percent of Martin County housing in single-family detached homes, many owners are affected. Check your eave depth, and ask the Martin County Building Department about your lot.

How often should I clean gutters near oaks in Stuart?
Twice a year at minimum, more under heavy canopy. Stuart gets 67.6 percent of its rain May through October, so clean before June. Live oaks drop leaves in spring, and pine needles peak September through November. A fall clean after the needle peak completes the rhythm. Never work on a roof when thunder is audible.

Do I need a permit to replace gutters in Martin County?
Confirm with the Martin County Building Department. The county's permitting guide says roof replacements and substantial roof repairs need a permit, and temporary tarping does not. It does not state a rule for gutter-only work, so ask before you hire. A contractor should also tell you what license they hold.
