Gutters in Plantation, FL

In a 10-year storm, rain in Plantation can fall at 10.8 inches an hour for five minutes. That burst is far harder than most gutters were sized to carry. Gutters here have to be chosen for the worst short downpour, not the average afternoon shower. The right size depends on the roof, the slope and where the water is sent after it leaves the gutter.

Sizing for local rain

How big gutters and downspouts need to be in Plantation

The Florida plumbing code sizes horizontal gutters from the flow off the roof. A 6-inch half-round gutter at a 1/8-inch-per-foot slope carries about 110 gallons a minute. A 5-inch one carries 74. That gap is roughly 49 percent, so the size step matters a great deal.

Downspouts follow their own table. A 2 by 3 inch leader handles about 30 gallons a minute, while a 3 by 4 1/4 inch or 4 inch round leader handles 192. Code also says to add half the area of any vertical wall that sheds rain onto the roof.

Plantation has about 40,014 housing units, and its 24-hour, 10-year storm drops 8.78 inches of rain. The 100-year storm drops 15.6 inches. Those totals tell you a gutter that runs full for hours will overflow even if it passes the short-burst test.

  • Ask for the gutter size, the downspout size and the slope on your written estimate.
  • Ask which rainfall basis the sizing used, since that changes the answer by more than twofold.
  • Confirm downspout count with your roofer after measuring the roof plan area.

Discharge and code

Where the water goes after the gutter

Florida's residential code requires gutters on most homes with eaves under 6 inches. Downspouts must discharge at least 1 foot from the sidewall, whether through underground pipe, a tail extension or a splash block.

Plantation's housing stock is mostly single-family detached homes, about 45 percent of units. Many of those lots drain toward the house, so a downspout that ends at the wall can soak the foundation during the June-to-October season, when about 72 percent of Fort Lauderdale's annual rain falls.

Keeping gutters clear

Leaves, pollen and cleaning on Plantation lots

Southern live oaks, which grow 60 to 80 feet tall, drop leaves and fruit that become a litter problem. Oaks and pines are major pollen producers in Florida, with the season running January to June and peaking in March and April.

The Florida pine-needle peak falls from September through November. A practical rhythm is to clean after the spring oak drop, before the June-to-September storm season, and after the autumn needle peak, more often under heavy canopy.

Consumer Reports found fine-mesh screens outperformed larger-hole screens, but none fully contained a severe downpour, and all still need brushing in high-pollen areas. Ladder work carries risk, and the National Weather Service warns against roof work when thunder can be heard.

Questions

Gutters in Plantation: questions

How big should gutters be for Plantation rain?

Size them against the local rainfall, not an average year. A 5-minute, 10-year storm in Plantation falls at 10.8 inches an hour. A 6-inch half-round gutter at a 1/8-inch slope carries about 110 gallons a minute under the plumbing code. Ask your roofer which rainfall basis was used, because the answer can change by more than twofold depending on the basis. Check the downspouts too, since a small leader can overflow a good gutter during a heavy storm.

Where can my downspouts drain on a Plantation lot?

Florida's residential code requires downspouts to discharge at least 1 foot from the sidewall. You can use underground piping, a tail extension or a splash block. Many Plantation homes are single-family detached houses on lots where water runs toward the foundation, so this rule matters. Confirm the local requirements with the City of Plantation Department of Building Safety before you change the drainage on your lot.

How often should I clean gutters near oak and pine trees?

In Plantation, a 5-minute, 10-year storm can fall at 10.8 inches an hour, so clogged gutters under oaks overflow fast. Cleaning twice a year is a common guideline from Florida insurers and roofing trades. Clean after the spring oak leaf drop and pollen season, before the June-to-September storm season, and after the autumn pine-needle peak. Clean more often under heavy canopy or after storms. Clogged gutters can cause water damage, mold and foundation problems.
