Gutters in Palm Bay, FL

In a 10-year storm, rain in Palm Bay can fall at 10.3 inches an hour for five minutes. A 100-year burst reaches 14.7. Gutters on a typical home here must pass that short, hard surge. Size, slope and downspout count decide whether water leaves the roof or spills over the edge.

Rain and sizing

How Palm Bay rain sizes your gutters

Palm Bay averages 55.55 inches of rain a year, and 21.31 inches of it falls from June through August. Sizing should follow the short burst, not the yearly total. The Florida Building Code, Plumbing, says horizontal gutters are sized by the flow rate from the roof surface.

The code table gives a 5-inch half-round gutter 74 gallons a minute at a 1/8 inch per foot slope. A 6-inch gutter carries 110. That is about 49 percent more water for the larger size. On a 1993-era house with a long unbroken eave, that extra capacity can matter.

The rainfall basis behind a quote moves the result. Here a 1-hour, 10-year rain is 3.08 inches an hour, far below the 10.3 inch five-minute burst. A gutter sized on the slower rate can overflow in the short surge. Ask any installer which rate the quote assumes.

Code and discharge

Downspout rules and where the water goes

Florida Building Code, Residential R318.5 requires gutters with downspouts where eaves project less than 6 inches. The rule skips gable end rakes and any roof sitting above another roof. Downspouts must discharge at least 1 foot from the sidewall, by underground pipe, tail extension or splash block.

Palm Bay homes are 83.5 percent single-family detached, so each house sheds its own water onto its own lot. A downspout that ends at the slab edge sends roof runoff to the foundation. Tail extensions are the plain fix.

Downspout size counts too. A 3 inch round leader carries 92 gallons a minute, and a 4 inch round carries 192. A long eave run feeding one small downspout can overflow even when the gutter is the right size.

Debris and upkeep

Leaves, pollen and how often to clean

University of Florida researchers put Florida's pollen season at January to June, peaking in March and April. Oaks and pines are major producers. Pine needle drop is heaviest in autumn, from September through November, and the needles brown after about two years.

A sensible rhythm under trees is late April to May, before the June to September storm season, and again in late November or December. Palm Bay gets 38 percent of its rain in June through August, so a clogged gutter in June is the costly case. Clean more often under heavy canopy.

Consumer Reports found fine-mesh screens outperformed coarse ones, but even the top scorer was only middling in a severe downpour. Screens still need brushing in high-pollen areas.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 7.3 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Palm Bay).

9,096 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Questions

Gutters in Palm Bay: questions

Do Palm Bay homes need gutters by code?

Often yes. Florida Building Code, Residential R318.5 requires gutters with downspouts on buildings whose eaves project less than 6 inches, except at gable end rakes or on a roof above another roof. The code treats this as termite protection. Many of Palm Bay's 50,147 housing units are single-family detached homes, so check your eave projection. Confirm the rule for your address with City of Palm Bay Building.

How far must a downspout discharge from the house?

At least 1 foot from the sidewall. The code allows underground piping, tail extensions or splash blocks to get there. On a flat lot, water that lands at the slab edge tends to run back toward the foundation, so many homeowners go farther than the minimum. Palm Bay sees 7.3 inches of rain in 24 hours in a 10-year storm, which is a lot of water to move.

What size gutter handles Palm Bay rain?

A 6 inch half-round gutter carries 110 gallons a minute at 1/8 inch per foot slope, against 74 for a 5 inch, per the plumbing code table. Palm Bay's 10-year, 5-minute rate is 10.3 inches an hour. Roof area, pitch and the number of downspouts decide the real fit. Ask the installer to show the rainfall basis used.

How often should I clean gutters under oak or pine trees?

At least twice a year, spring and fall, and more often under heavy canopy. A Florida insurer also recommends cleaning more often with overhanging trees or frequent storms. Palm Bay gets 21.31 inches of rain from June through August, so clean before June. A good Central Florida schedule is after the spring oak leaf drop, before June storms, and after the autumn pine needle peak.
