Gutters in Micanopy, FL

Hurricane Irma dropped 10.70 inches of rain 2.1 miles NNE of Micanopy in 2017, and a 5-minute downpour in a 10-year storm here reaches 9.48 inches an hour. That burst, not the daily total, decides whether your gutters keep up. Many homes here were built long before modern gutter sizing, so an older system may be too small.

Sizing for local rain

How heavy rain here sizes your gutters

The plumbing code sizes gutters by the flow the roof sends into them, and the roof area and slope set that flow. Micanopy's rain is far heavier than the old sizing tables assumed, so the table you were given may understate the load.

By our arithmetic, a 6-inch half-round gutter at 1/8 inch per foot serves about 1,107 square feet of roof on a 5-minute, 10-year burst. Use the 100-year, 1-hour basis and the same gutter serves about 2,671 square feet, but that basis is not the one the sizing tables use for this burst.

  • Check each gutter run against roof area and slope before you choose a size.
  • A 6-inch half-round carries about 49% more flow than a 5-inch at the same slope.
  • Walls that shed rain onto the roof add to the load.

Code and runoff

Downspout rules and where the water goes

Every Micanopy downspout has to carry its water a foot or more away from the house wall, whether through buried pipe, a tail extension or a splash block. On a lot where the ground slopes toward the foundation, a short discharge sends that water right back to the footing.

Downspouts need to be large enough for the storm they carry. The code table lists a 2 1/2 by 3 inch leader at 92 gallons a minute for round and 2 by 2 inch at 30. Measure your own downspouts against the roof area that drains into them.

Keeping gutters clear

Leaves, pollen and cleaning in oak country

Southern live oaks in Florida shed fruit and leaves that become a litter problem, and they can grow 60 to 80 feet tall. Oaks and pines are the major pollen producers, with pollen season from January to June and peaks in March and April.

Needle drop from pines is heaviest in the autumn months, and a workable rhythm is to clean after the spring oak drop, before the June through September storm season, and after that autumn peak. Clean more often under a heavy canopy.

Consumer testing found that gutter inserts did poorly and still needed brushing in high-pollen areas. Clogged gutters can cause water damage, mold and foundation problems, so plan on regular cleaning.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 6.13 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Micanopy).

7,638 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet ร— inches ร— 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Micanopy: questions

How much rain falls in a Micanopy storm?

In a 10-year storm, a 5-minute burst falls at 9.48 inches an hour here. A 1-hour rain in the same storm falls at 2.83 inches an hour. Over 24 hours, a 10-year storm drops 6.13 inches, and a 100-year storm drops 10.3 inches. Heavy bursts like these overwhelm small gutters first, which is why the short burst matters more than the daily total.

Do I need gutters with downspouts on my Micanopy home?

Florida's residential code requires gutters with downspouts where the eaves project less than 6 inches, with exceptions at gable end rakes and on a roof above another roof. Many homes in Micanopy were built before 1980, so an older house may not match current practice. Check the layout with the Alachua County building office before you change it.

Can a gutter be too small for a Florida storm?

Yes. Per our arithmetic, a 5-inch half-round sloped at 1/8 inch per foot moves 74 gallons a minute, whereas a 6-inch model handles 110. That is about 49% more flow. Sizing also depends on the design basis used, since a 100-year, 1-hour basis gives a far larger roof area per gutter than the 5-minute, 10-year burst. Ask for the sizing basis before you accept a replacement.
