Gutters in Lake Hamilton, FL

A five-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 9.04 inches an hour in Lake Hamilton, according to NOAA Atlas 14. That is a lot of water to move off a roof in a short time. Gutters and downspouts here need to be sized for that burst, not for an ordinary shower. Here is how the sizing works and what the code asks of you.

Sizing for local rain

Local rainfall determines the size you need for gutters and downspouts

Horizontal gutters are sized by the plumbing code using the flow rate that comes off the roof. Capacities by diameter and slope appear in Table 1106.6. A 6 inch half-round gutter at 1/8 inch per foot carries 110 gallons a minute, while a 5 inch one carries 74. That is about 49 percent more, .

Local rain sets the design basis. At this town's 10-year, 1-hour rate of 2.8 inches an hour, and its 24-hour total of 6.1 inches in a 10-year storm, a roof drains a lot of water across a day. The 100-year 24-hour total is 10.6 inches, so ask your installer which basis they used.

Downspouts carry the water down. Table 1106.3 lists a 3 by 4 1/4 inch or 4 inch round leader at 192 gallons a minute, and a 2 by 2 inch leader at only 30. Add half the area of any wall that sheds rain onto the roof, as section 1106.4 requires.

Downspout discharge rules

Deciding where runoff should end up on your property

Florida code requires gutters with downspouts on buildings with eaves under 6 inches, except at gable rakes or on a roof above another roof. Each downspout must discharge at least 1 foot from the sidewall, by pipe, tail extension or splash block.

Lake Hamilton has about 0.98 square miles of water in its total area, roughly 24 percent. Many lots sit near standing water, so confirm the discharge direction on your own lot with the Town of Lake Hamilton before you set it.

Keeping gutters clear

Managing debris, pollen and yard cleanup on a Lake Hamilton property

Oaks and pines are major pollen producers here, with laurel oaks first and live oaks next. Florida pollen runs from January to June, peaking in March and April. Live oaks drop leaves that are a litter problem for gutters.

In Lake Hamilton, pine needles build up most in the autumn, which is when a gutter check pays off. Clean after the spring oak drop, before the June through September storm season, and again after the needle peak. Trade and insurer sources suggest at least twice a year.

Rain on your roof

Preset: 6.1 inches, the 10-year 24-hour rain (NOAA Atlas 14 at Lake Hamilton).

7,601 gallons run off that roof, all of it toward the gutters and downspouts.

Math: square feet ร— inches ร— 0.623 gallons.

Questions

Gutters in Lake Hamilton: questions

How hard does it rain in Lake Hamilton?

A five-minute downpour in a 10-year storm falls at 9.04 inches an hour here. A 24-hour rain in a 10-year storm totals 6.1 inches, and a 100-year storm totals 10.6 inches. These are NOAA Atlas 14 values for this town, so gutters should be sized for short bursts as well as steady rain. Ask your installer which design basis they used.

How big should gutters be on a Lake Hamilton home?

The plumbing code lists a 6 inch half-round gutter at 1/8 inch per foot slope at 110 gallons a minute, against 74 for a 5 inch gutter. Size the gutter to the roof area and the local design rainfall. Confirm the final size with the Town of Lake Hamilton permit office before work starts.

Where should downspouts drain in Lake Hamilton?

Under Florida code, every downspout must release water a minimum of 1 foot away from the building wall. Use a pipe, tail extension or splash block. Lake Hamilton has about 24 percent water in its total area, so check drainage on your lot.
